Abstract: As part of a collaboration among members of the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture (EHJV) New Brunswick Steering Committee, I developed a Habitat Conservation Strategy (HCS) for the Baie-des-Chaleur bioregion of New Brunswick. This HCS is the last in a series that now ensures all areas of New Brunswick have been assessed and considered from a conservation perspective. The purpose of an HCS is to highlight and acknowledge the need for better communication and coordination to make recommendations for regional and local conservation groups to better tackle threats present in the bioregion. I gathered information for the HCS through literature review, additional research, and consultation with a variety of experts and organizations through three conservation open-standards workshops. The HCS provides an overview of what conservation actions are being considered for the Baie-des-Chaleur bioregion or those that have already been implemented. The HCS will help create opportunities to enhance partnerships, and to recognize that each organization is guided by its own particular mission, vision, and/or guiding principles. In addition, the HCS identified seven priority habitat types present in the Baie-des-Chaleur bioregion: Coastal Wetlands (i.e., Salt Marshes, Barachois Ponds, Eelgrass beds, and Tidal Flats), Beaches, Dunes, Rocky Shores and Cliffs, Islands, Aquatic and Riparian Systems, Freshwater Wetlands, Acadian and High-Elevation Forests, and Agro-ecosystems. To further this analysis, I assessed these priority habitat types against the ongoing and emerging threats present in the bioregion. Furthermore, the HCS provides a collaborative list of the conservation actions that are being implemented to help conserve and protect this bioregion. Ultimately, the report (HCS) I produced as part of my MEM program provides a valuable deliverable for the client (the EHJV NB Steering Committee) as it completes their HCS coverage of New Brunswick.
