The Valedictorian provides a formal address to all fellow graduating students and to faculty and guests at Encaenia. Any University of New Brunswick student, staff, or faculty member can nominate a graduating student to be Valedictorian. Potential candidates should be meet the criteria outlined below.

Nomination Guidelines

The Award

The UNBF Grad Class identify four Valedictorians for the May Encaenia. Valedictorians will write and deliver an address to fellow graduates, faculty, honoured guests, friends and family attending Encaenia.

Eligibility and Criteria

Nominees will be considered by the Grad Class in terms of the criteria listed below:

• Open to all students graduating from UNB degree programs from the UNB Fredericton campus
• Student should be graduating at the upcoming May Encaenia
• Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in their last 60 credit hours or higher
• Involvement in campus and community activities will be strongly considered
• Candidates should have strong public speaking skills

Nominations

Nominations are to be made on the form available from the UNB grad class website or can be picked up from the Welcome Centre in the Student Union Building. 

  • To nominate a student for Valedictorian, the nominator must complete the nomination form and have the candidate sign the form and confirm all contact information is correct. Attached to the nomination form must be a letter or paragraph outlining the rationale for nomination.
  • Nominations are to be received by the Grad Class Advisor by no later than Wednesday, February 27th by 4:00 pm. Nominations can be dropped off at the SUB Welcome Centre or at the UNB Alumni Office (13 Bailey Drive) or emailed to gradclass@unb.ca.

Selection Process

  • • Selection of valedictorian will be based upon two weighted results; a voting process by graduating class students (50%) and a judged presentation process by a panel of UNB representatives (50%).
    • Valedictorian campaigning will begin at 12:00 noon on Friday, March 1st and end at 4:00 pm on Thursday, March 28th.
    • Voting for valedictorians will occur from Friday, March 22nd at 4:00 pm to March 28th at 4:00 pm. Results from the voting process will be released on Friday, March 29h.
    • Only graduating students will be eligible to vote for valedictorian candidates in their respective Encaenia ceremonies.
    • Candidate presentations will occur on Wednesday, March 20th, Thursday, March 21st and Friday, March 22nd. Candidate presentations will be open for viewing to all members of the 2013 Graduating Class.
    • Candidate Presentations will be scored by a panel of 3-5 representatives of the university community. Results of the panel presentation will be released on Friday, March 29th in conjunction with final voting results.
    • Four (4) valedictorians will be selected; each representing one of the faculties in their particular graduation ceremony. Ceremony A – Nursing and Science, Ceremony B – Business, Kinesiology and Education, Ceremony C – Arts, Law, Renaissance College and Interdisciplinary Studies, and Ceremony D – Engineering, Forestry and Environmental Management and Computer Science.

Campaigning Process

  • Elections shall be held via electronic vote and coordinated by UNB Integrated Technologies Services, the 2013 Grad Class and the UNB Associated Alumni Office.
  • Campaigning shall be paperless (ie. no posters, pamphlets, brochures, etc.).
  • Candidates are free to use any electronic media to promote awareness about their candidacy.
  • No candidate, during the conduct of his or her campaign, shall infringe upon any copyright or use the logos of the University of New Brunswick.
  • Any candidate found or caught defaming another candidate will be subject to immediate disqualification from the nominated position at the discretion of the Grad Class Advisor.
