How partnering with UNB works

Knowledge and technology transfer is conducted at the University of New Brunswick in the following ways:

Service Contracts: Clients can access our brain trust of researchers and technical staff at both campuses to solve problems, conduct studies, consult, develop models, etc. These contracts are readily created through ORS staff, who provide introductions and facilitation for such services.

Development Agreements: Clients can bring technology to the table or may want specific technology developed that results in new or joint intellectual property (IP) and new products. UNB generates agreements covering project and commercial development, with commercial benefits going to the company.

License and Assignment Agreements: Clients can access available UNB developed technologies through various forms of license or assignment. Tapping into existing technologies can improve the product-to-market timeline. These technologies typically have patents already received or pending at the time of posting, helping to strengthen the uniqueness of the innovation. Most technologies will have reached at least a working prototype stage, and commercial partnership with UNB will allow new funding to be pursued, reducing industry risk.

Technology Assessments: Clients may receive access to a researcher at no cost to assess a technology or new product/capability. The costs of this service are borne by an agreement with NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) and are subject to their approval. If approved, the company bears no direct costs associated with the researcher time; generally, this amounts to 24 to 36 hours of consultation. UNB ORS will facilitate the liaison for you and generates a report that can then be used for further investment, including with NRC IRAP.

Company Spin-outs: Students, staff and researchers often consider spinning out a company from the technology developed at UNB. UNB ORS manages and supports these start-ups in various ways including supporting the creation of a company, finding investment, creating the base agreements to transfer the technology to the company, and incubating the company where possible based on available resources.
