Changes to UNB Unix Services

Campus Affected: All UNB Campuses
As part of ITS’s ongoing efforts to improve the UNB website while also reducing security vulnerabilities, UNB’s Unix services will be decommissioned on July 31, 2013.
Beginning May 6, no new Unix accounts have been created; however, anyone with an existing Unix account will continue to have access to unix.unb.ca until July 31, when this service will be permanently removed.
If you currently use Unix, please prepare to move to linux.unb.ca or another system prior to this date.
If you currently edit your UNB professional page or a UNB webpage through Unix or Contribute, please visit the ITS website at: http://www.unb.ca/its/faculty-staff/create-professional-webpages.html for information on how to claim a website on UNB’s new web hosting service. Any websites not moved over to the new host prior to July 31, 2013 will no longer be accessible.
If you use Pine as your email client, it is recommended you move to Microsoft Outlook, UNB’s supported email client, as soon as possible. After July 31, Pine will no longer work.

Change in Off-campus Email Services for some Faculty, Staff, and Retirees

Effective immediately faculty, staff and retirees NOT within the connectEd environment (also known as Exchange) will no longer be able to send email through UNB’s email server when off campus. This has been identified as a vulnerability which has been exploited by spammers as a result of successful phishing attempts.

Want to make sure you’re connectEd?
Log in to your myUNB Portal and look under the UNB Email widget; if there is ONLY a single link titled ‘Go to my email and calendar’ you are connectEd. You can click on this link to check and send emails or manage your calendar from any computer on or off campus.

Access to GroupWise will be discontinued as of May 31, 2013

This notice is to advise you that you will no longer be able to access your GroupWise calendar as of May 31, 2013. GroupWise, UNB’s former calendaring system, is being discontinued; if you use GroupWise for your personal UNB calendar, please transfer your appointments, tasks and other calendar information into Microsoft Outlook, UNB’s supported calendaring system prior to this date.
For instructions on how to setup your Outlook calendar from on-campus, visit the following link and select your computer’s operating system from the right-hand menu: http://www.unb.ca/its/faculty-staff/laptop-desktop/index.html .
Alternatively, you can access your personal UNB calendar from anywhere using Outlook Online, which can be accessed through your myUNB Portal. For more details, visit: http://www.unb.ca/its/faculty-staff/off-campus-access/owa/index.html .
If you currently use GroupWise to manage your faculty or departmental room bookings, please email solutions@unb.ca for advice on an alternate solution.

IT Service Interruption on Wednesday, May 22 beginning at 6:00 a.m

The network maintenance was completed successfully.
If you have questions or concerns please contact the ITS Help Desk at: help desk@unb.ca or 453-5199.
On Wednesday, May 22 from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. (1 hour), there will be a Network outage in the following locations to allow ITS to perform maintenance for the upcoming VoIP telephone services.
- Incutech Building #1
- Campus House
- Neville Homestead
- ITC
As a result, all IT Services will be unavailable in these locations during the outage, including:
- All UNB email
- Access to Network printing and drives
- Datatel
- eServices
- Footprints
- All UNB Webpages
- CMS
- Desire2Learn
No email will be lost during the outage. All emails will be put in a queue and delivered when services are restored.
