UNB email once again blocked by some email providers
Outage Time: May 01, 2013 08:20 AM - Present
Services Affected: Email
Campus Affected: All UNB Campuses
ITS has restored the ability to send outgoing email. Unfortunately, UNB has once again been added to the email blocked list, SORBS, which means some emails you send may not be delivered. We anticipate remaining on this list for at least two weeks. We are continuing to investigate if we have been added to any other blocked lists.
Until we have been removed from blocked lists, if you’re sending an email of importance, be aware that not all undelivered emails will send you a bounce-back or undelivered notification. To ensure your email has been successfully delivered to the intended recipient, please contact them directly to confirm delivery.
To learn more about protecting yourself from phishing attacks visit: http://www.unb.ca/its/it-security/email.html .
If you have any questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 453-5199 or helpdesk@unb.ca .
Another successful phishing attack against a UNB employee has resulted in temporary suspension of outgoing e-mail from UNB's internal email systems while ITS investigates the incident and adds additional safeguards.
Email between Faculty and Staff on campus in Fredericton or Saint John is unaffected. Email to students is affected. All email to the outside world will be queued and sent once the matter is resolved. Further updates will be provided as more information is available.
If you have questions or concerns please contact the ITS Help Desk at: helpdesk@unb.ca or 453-5199
Up to 12 Hour Delay Receiving Non-UNB Emails
Outage Time: May 06, 2013 12:38 PM - Present
Services Affected: Email
Campus Affected: All UNB Campuses
Faculty, staff and students of UNB, as well as ECN sites, may experience a delay of up to 12 hours when receiving emails from individuals outside of UNB or other ECN institutions.
This delay is due to last week's successful phishing attack, generating nearly a million outgoing spam messages to be sent from UNB. All of these spam emails have caused a substantial amount of bounce back notifications that need to be processed by UNB's servers.
Emails sent by unb.ca email addresses to unb.ca email addresses are unaffected by this delay.
If you have questions or concerns please contact the ITS Help Desk at: heldpesk@unb.ca or 453-5199
Change in Off-campus Email Services for some Faculty, Staff, and Retirees
Outage Time: May 02, 2013 09:34 AM - Present
Services Affected: Email
Campus Affected: All UNB Campuses
Effective immediately faculty, staff and retirees NOT within the connectEd environment (also known as Exchange) will no longer be able to send email through UNB’s email server when off campus. This has been identified as a vulnerability which has been exploited by spammers as a result of successful phishing attempts.
If you are experiencing trouble sending email from off-campus please contact the ITS Help Desk for assistance – helpdesk@unb.ca or 453-5199.
Want to make sure you’re connectEd?
Log in to your myUNB Portal and look under the UNB Email widget; if there is ONLY a single link titled ‘Go to my email and calendar’ you are connectEd. You can click on this link to check and send emails or manage your calendar from any computer on or off campus.
If you aren’t connectEd and would like to be, please email the ITS Help Desk with your request.
If you have any questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 453-5199 or helpdesk@unb.ca .
