First year’s tuition-free winner

UNB is committed to providing every student with a transformative and equitable learning experience. To support the community, UNB’s First Year’s Tuition Free contest, created by the student recruitment office, randomly selects a winner to receive free first-year tuition.

The contest intentionally selects a winner at random as a commitment to being inclusive of all prospective and first-year students regardless of their background, program or grades.

Ethan Tucker, a student from Newfoundland, was the lucky winner of the 2022 UNB’s First Year’s Tuition Free contest. He is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program on the UNB Saint John campus and plays for the Seawolves men’s volleyball team.

Through the financial support of free tuition, Ethan could dedicate his summer to training for the 2022 Summer Canada Games in Niagara, Ontario, representing Newfoundland’s men's volleyball team. For Ethan, winning the free tuition contest helped him pursue his passion by providing him the financial stability to go without a summer job.

The grand prize for the contest is free domestic undergraduate tuition with an approximate retail value of $8,830 to $11,844, depending on the program. Students in grades 11 and 12 may also enter the contest and have the chance to win a secondary prize consisting of a MacBook Air or iPad Pro.

Students interested in the contest can enter by completing a ballot at any UNB student recruitment event, during a campus tour or online.
