Sir Howard Douglas Society

Non Nobis Solum: Not for Ourselves Alone

Established in 2006, membership in the Sir Howard Douglas Society is intended to recognize, promote, cultivate and encourage outstanding UNB undergraduate students who have achieved academic excellence while actively participating in extracurricular or co-curricular activities, particularly volunteer activities, after completing at least year two of their undergraduate studies. Scholars exemplify the society's motto, Non Nobis Solum: Not for Ourselves Alone.

While the Sir Howard Douglas Award recognizes past excellence, its purpose is to encourage the recipient's continued success both in academic endeavors and in contributing to the success of others.

Each year scholars are inducted into the honour society and presented with the Sir Howard Douglas Society pin. The pin is a detail from the coat of arms of the Douglas family. The heart is that of King Robert the Bruce, a 14th-century Scottish hero who fought for freedom against the English. Sir Howard's ancestor, Sir James Douglas, was a supporter and lifelong friend of King Robert. The crown above the heart denotes royalty.

Scholars have the unique opportunity to become part of a network of outstanding students. As the honour society grows each year, new members meet and interact with past recipients of the Sir Howard Douglas Award. Today, the Sir Howard Douglas Society has a membership of 293 UNB students and alumni.

Do you know a deserving student? Are you a future Sir Howard Douglas Scholar?

The online application for the Sir Howard Douglas Award, is available in myUNB (Scholarships, Prizes & Awards) from Sept. 1 to Oct. 30. Potential scholars are encouraged to complete the application form - UNB wants to know about these outstanding students and celebrate their accomplishments.

Sir Howard Douglas Award

The award is open to full and part-time undergraduate students who have completed the equivalent of at least year two of an undergraduate degree program, achieved Dean's List in the previous year, and nominated by their faculty. Selection is based on two factors: scholastic attainment and involvement in extracurricular and/or co-curricular activities. Scholastic attainment is measured by the student's GPA.

The nature of the student's extracurricular and/or co-curricular activities is assessed on the basis of the significance of the student's contribution, innovation related to the activity, amount and time of involvement, its independence from actual course or program work, its independence from remuneration, and its linkage to the student's overall growth as a human being.
