What is COHS?

UNB's online Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is designed to help practitioners from different backgrounds develop the broad base of competencies needed to be effective in the development, implementation, and evaluation of occupational health and safety programs and systems. As well, many people looking for a career change take the COHS program to gain entry into the field.

This certificate is also designed to prepare students to write the CRST or CRSP exam to become a Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) or a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) as granted by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP). NOTE: This program meets the CRST educational requirement for program hours, however, successful complete of the COHS and DOHS programs are required to meet the educational hours to write the CRSP.

Does this program have any prerequisites?

There are no prerequisites for the COHS program.

What are the COHS courses?

Students are given 10 weeks to complete each 42-hour course.

Each course has module quizzes; there are a different amount of quizzes depending on the course. There is also one assignment for each course. It is completed in a Word document and then uploaded to the course website.

What are the different course "clusters" and what courses are in each?

There are three "clusters" of courses: Fundamental, Management & Leadership, and Specializations.

Fundamental Cluster

  • COHS 3120 - Fundamentals of Occupational Hygiene
  • COHS 3130 - Legislative Compliance and Corporate Responsibility

Management & Leadership Cluster

  • COHS 3210 - Management of Health and Safety Systems
  • COHS 3220 - Management, Leadership, and Organizational Behaviour
  • COHS 3230 - Risk Management and Risk Communication

Specializations Cluster

  • COHS 3310 - Accident Causation Theory and Incident Investigation
  • COHS 3320 - Fundamentals of Environmental Management

How much does COHS cost?

You can purchase courses one-by-one at a cost of $595 per course or pay for the entire program upfront for $6,545. There are no additional fees or textbooks required.

What is BCRSP and why is it important for COHS?

Upon completion, certificate holders will meet the formal education requirements for certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP). Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental work experience and professional development requirements must also be met in order to be eligible for certification.

How do I register for COHS?

The COHS program is open-entry, which means you can register and start the program at any time.

If you have (or are) a sponsor, there is a different registration process (see below).

After you click the "register now" link, you will be asked whether this is your first course with UNB or not. Please indicate "yes" 
if you are a new student or “no” if you have taken previous COHS courses.

You must then select if you would like to pay for the full program or pay on a per-course basis.

Once you've selected how you would like to pay for the program, you will be able to select the course you want to begin with. We recommend starting with COHS 3110 - Health and Safety Program Basics, unless you have applied for prior learning. Once you have selected your course, click submit

You will then be taken to a new screen. Please enter your personal information and method of payment. If you are paying by credit card you must select "credit card" then click submit. You will now be directed to a second secure session where you will be able to make your payment.

Are there funding options for COHS?

Our OHS programs are not recognized by student loans as they are not considered part-time or full-time studies due to the online delivery method. However, our students have been able to obtain funding through alternative routes, including:

  • UNB Awards and Scholarships (and known Provincial funding options)
  • Student Line of Credit through your bank
  • RESP's (Registered Education Savings Plan) or RRSP's (Registered Retirement Savings Plan)
  • Employment Insurance

Are there sponsorship opportunities for COHS?

In order to send a formal invoice to your sponsor, please have your sponsor fax or email a copy of your PO to our office. The PO must have the following information:

  • Student's name
  • Course name
  • Payment amount (Payment options: $595 per course or $6,545 for entire program)
  • Sponsor's mailing address
  • Sponsor's contact phone number

How do I register if I have a sponsor?

If you have a sponsor, please register using the following steps:

Once you click the "register now" link, you will be taken to a new page. Please select the "Certificate Program" option then click "proceed". Enter your personal information and method of payment. Please select "Prepaid" then click "submit". Our client services team will then follow up with you regarding the next steps.
