Clinical Behaviour Change

Psychology PSYC 3565 Three (3) credit hours

This course explores the application of behaviour change procedures across a wide range of client populations and behaviours of concern, including intellectual and developmental disabilities, addictions, common childhood behavioural problems, and gerontology. Emphasizing the critical role of assessment and understanding contextual factors, the course explores interventions that enhance the quality of life of clients across diverse populations.

What you will learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Know and understand advanced concepts in behaviour analysis.
    • Define and provide examples of concepts such as reinforcement, punishment, behaviour, response class, socially mediated contingencies, rule-governed behaviour, contingency-shaped behaviour, derived stimulus relations.
    • Explain how behaviour principles contribute to behaviour assessment and intervention in clinical and organizational settings.
  • Know and understand behavoiur change procedures used in clinical settings.
    • Identify various self-management strategies, token economies, and reinforcement systems.
    • Distinguish between direct instruction, personalized system of instruction, precision teaching, incidental teaching, and discrete-trial training.
    • Identify uses of prompts and prompt fading, differential reinforcement procedures, group contingencies.
    • Explain advanced behaviour intervention strategies such as the matching law, Premack principle, behavioural momentum, schedules of reinforcement/punishment, and discrimination and matching-to-sample.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

  • 10 x module journals (20%)
  • 10 x module quizzes (20%)
  • 1 x mid-course exam (invigilated, 30%)
  • 1 x final exam (invigilated, 30%)

The exams for this course will be invigilated on an approved date using Respondus e-proctoring software (LockDown Browser and Monitor). This is a free tool provided with this course; a webcam is required. More information will be given once you have been registered.
