Foundations of Biological Psychology

Psychology PSYC 2703 Three (3) credit hours

This course will introduce students to basic neurophysiology, neurochemistry and neuroanatomy in humans and other animals. It will cover the methods used to study fundamental processes underlying neural development, function, and communication. By the end of the course, students will understand how the nervous system is able to produce and control a wide variety of behaviours, including those involved in vision, hearing, touch, memory and language.

Course content will be of interest to students from various backgrounds, including the psychological sciences, biological sciences, social sciences, medical sciences and health care areas. The format of the course allows students to work through a learning environment at their own pace, at a time that is convenient for them, wherever they are (e.g., home, work, other).

This course also fulfills three of the 12 required credits in foundations courses toward a bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of New Brunswick and is a pre-requisite for all upper-level neuroscience-related courses offered in the Psychology Department (e.g., Physiological Psychology, Experimental Human Neuropsychology).

Prerequisite: Introductory Psychology (6 ch) or permission of instructor.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

  • 10 x short-answer assignments (20% total; each worth 2%)
  • 3 x exams (80% total)
    • Exam 1 = invigilated, 20%
    • Exam 2 = invigilated, 20%
    • Exam 3 = invigilated, 40%
  • Bonus reports (2% total)

The exam(s) for this course will be invigilated on an approved date using Respondus e-proctoring software (LockDown Browser only - no webcam required).
