Intervention Strategies and Programs for People Who Batter

Family Violence Issues FVI 3006 Three (3) credit hours

This course presents an overview of the theory, literature, research and evaluation strategies that inform the development and delivery of interventions for people who commit violence in intimate partner relationships. Students are invited to immerse themselves in the materials and to reflect critically on the complex issues that are manifest in this field.

This course is cross listed as SOCI 3006. Credit can only be obtained for one of FVI 3006 and SOCI 3006.

  • This is a core course for the Family Violence Issues Certificate Program at UNB.
  • Students will become very familiar with the field of batterer intervention, examining its strengths, its weaknesses and its controversies.
  • Students will have the opportunity to engage in personal reflection as they begin to come to conclusions about what they think the most appropriate interventions are for people who commit intimate partner violence.
  • Students will gain skills in critically analyzing and responding to academic literature and socio-political positions.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

  • 10 x posts on class discussion board (10% total)
  • 9 x response papers* (90% total)

Each paper must be 5-10 pages and must use the material covered during that module to address the "questions of interest" that emerged from the material.
