Advanced Methods of Construction Certificate

Advancing education in off-site construction

At the University of New Brunswick, we are committed to driving innovation and excellence in the construction industry through education and research. Our upcoming Advanced Methods of Construction (AMC) certificate is designed to equip students and professionals looking to further their education with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the rapidly evolving field of off-site construction.

About the program

AMC will provide a comprehensive education in off-site construction, also known as modular or prefabricated construction. This method involves manufacturing building components or modules in a controlled facility and assembling them on-site, leading to benefits such as increased efficiency, reduced waste, improved quality, and enhanced safety. Our courses will cover key themes including:

  • Design for manufacturing and assembly
  • Lean construction
  • Building science and technology
  • Project management and planning
  • Building information modeling (BIM) and digital technologies
  • Automation and robotics

AMC will be offered as a graduate-level certificate, tailored for working professionals with a background in construction, or for incoming graduate students looking to dive deeper into the field of off-site construction.

Unique industry focus

Designed with working professionals in mind, the Advanced Methods of Construction graduate certificate can be completed on a part-time basis in as little as one year. All courses are delivered in the evening at the UNB Fredericton campus.

AMC will aim to stand out by involving industry in participation and instruction, ensuring that students gain practical, hands-on experience. Instructors and mentors will be sought from industry, providing real-world insights, and fostering a deep understanding of current challenges and opportunities in off-site construction.

Admission requirements

The certificate will require a background in the construction industry that includes prior competencies in engineering principles. Engineering knowledge may be demonstrated through either:

  1. An engineering degree or,
  2. A combination of college-level technical training and 5-10 years of construction industry experience.

In addition to an application, applicants must provide a resume, references, and a transcript showing a minimum GPA of 3.0. See the School of Graduate Studies Admissions for more details.
