This course is designed for students and professionals from all disciplines without any background in Geography or Geomatics. You'll learn how to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to create, explore, and analyze location-based data across a range of fields, including public health, history, criminology, economics, emergency planning, environmental studies, and political science.
Through a mix of accessible theory and practical exercises, you’ll discover how to uncover patterns, enhance data analysis, and create powerful visualizations. The course offers a beginner-friendly, hands-on introduction to spatial analysis using ESRI ArcGIS Pro, making it ideal for anyone curious about how "where" influences "what" in the world around us.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:
Understand how GIS supports research in the social science fields by exploring real-world applications.
Analyze and visualize spatial patterns and relationships, applying GIS techniques to real-world case studies and designing effective maps and visual outputs to communicate your findings clearly to diverse audiencesDevelop core GIS skills using ArcGIS Pro, including mapping, working with coordinate systems, buffering, data linking, geocoding, georeferencing.
Work with a variety of spatial and non-spatial datasets, learning where to find data, how to clean and convert it into GIS-compatible formats, and how to create your own spatial data through geocoding.
Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.
The exam for this course will be invigilated on an approved date using Respondus e-proctoring software (LockDown Browser and Monitor). This is a free tool provided with this course; a webcam is required. More information will be given once you have been registered.
There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition and fees.
