Violence Against Women

This is a core course for the Family Violence Issues Certificate Program at UNB but can be taken separately from the Certificate Program. The course examines issues about violence against women in Western society, including gender socialization, gender dynamics in dating and family relationships, private versus public, the contributions of social institutions (e.g., sports; the media; schools; the workplace; the military; the medical, legal and criminal justice systems) and the special vulnerability of women in marginalized groups.

Note: This course is cross listed as FVI 3634. Credit can only be obtained for one of FVI 3634 and SOCI 3634.

Prerequisite: 3 ch of any Sociology course or permission of the instructor.

What you will learn

This course is designed to help you:

• Learn about the issues within the study of violence against women (e.g. the forms and extent of violence, realities of the resources available to survivors, and changes in the social and legal responses to domestic violence).
• Understand and evaluate violence against women at the intersections of various social positions (e.g. race, class, immigration status).
• Analyze issues within the area of intimate partner violence and evaluate the diversity of survivors and their experiences according to the intersection of race, class and immigration status. You will also learn how intersections shape the way abuse is experienced, the usefulness of intervention services, the way survivors perceive police responses, and how women resist their abusers and escape.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

• 11 x learning module entries (11 x 3% for a total of 33%)
• 1 x historical development assignment (27%)
• 1 x integration paper (40%)

Fees and payments

There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition and fees. This fee is non-refundable once the add/drop date has passed within the term the course is registered in. Please note this fee will be automatically added and included in your term tuition fees.
