Sociology SOCI 3403 Three (3) credit hours

This course aims at understanding the processes involved in social interaction and construction of reality. It uses symbolic interactionism as a sociological framework for the study of human culture. The topics include socialization and its role in shaping the self; stereotyping and stigma and their roles in reproducing social injustices; and collective behaviour and social movements.

What you will learn

This course is designed to help you:

  • Gain familiarity with one of the most important sociological theories.
  • Understand the process of socialization and identity formation as negotiation of social meaning.
  • Understand the nature and function of stereotyping and stigma in intergroup contexts.
  • Explore the ways in which power is used to mobilize support and effect social change.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

  • 7 x module assignments (75% total)
  • 7 x module discussions (14% total)
  • 1 x mind map assignment (3%)
  • 1 x end-of-course reflection assignment (8%)

Fees and payments

There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition and fees. This fee is non-refundable once the add/drop date has passed within the term the course is registered in. Please note this fee will be automatically added and included in your term tuition fees.
