In this course, we develop an ethical framework that includes the more-than-human world. We also learn how to thoughtfully identify different and competing ethical perspectives and theories that are embedded in discourses about the earth and its citizens.

Note: Students can receive credit for only one of PHIL 2206, PHIL 3206, and PHIL 3208. While this course is open to all students, only one upper division course in applied ethics counts towards the major or Honours requirements without permission of the chair or advisor.

What you will learn

This course is designed to help you:

  • Understand our relationship to the earth in ethical terms.
  • Learn about a variety of strategic models for promoting an ethical relationship with the world.
  • Develop a sense of how ethics is persuasive, including the importance of communication of ethical ideas.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

  • 5 x written assignments (100% total)

There are five (5) written assignments assigned over the four units (Unit One: 5% and 15%; Unit Two: 25%; Unit Three: 25%; and Unit Four: 30%).

These assignments are reflection-based: linking the reading topics of each Unit to actual ecological issues or cases. There are no midterm or final exams for this course.

Fees and payments

There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition and fees. This fee is non-refundable once the add/drop date has passed within the term the course is registered in. Please note this fee will be automatically added and included in your term tuition fees.
