Calculus I: Differential Calculus

Subject Course No. Credit Value
Math MATH 1003 Three (3) credit hours

This course focuses on limits, continuity, and the differentiation of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, and inverse trigonometric functions. Students will apply derivatives to curve sketching, optimization, and related rates, and will be introduced to basic integration techniques and applications.

This course is accepted for credit transfer to most postsecondary institutions in Canada.

Contact the instructor to request a syllabus.

Instructor: Mahin Salmani
Prerequisite: A minimum grade of 60% in New Brunswick high school courses: Pre-Calculus A 120 and Pre-Calculus B 120, or equivalent courses.

What you will learn

  • Understand functions, their properties, and transformations
  • Evaluate limits, determine continuity, and apply L'Hôpital's Rule
  • Differentiate polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, and inverse trigonometric functions using derivative rules
  • Apply derivatives to curve sketching, optimization, and related rates problems
  • Use key theorems, including the Extreme Value Theorem and the Mean Value Theorem, in problem solving
  • Determine antiderivatives of basic functions

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

  • 18 x webwork assignments (15% total)
  • 4 x module tests (invigilated, 32% total)
  • 1 x final exam (invigilated, 53%)

The exam(s) for this course will be invigilated on an approved date using Respondus e-proctoring software (LockDown Browser and Monitor). This is a free tool provided with this course; a webcam is required. More information will be given once you have been registered.

Fees and payments

There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition and fees. This fee is non-refundable once the add/drop date has passed within the term the course is registered in. Please note this fee will be automatically added and included in your term tuition fees.
