Kinesiology KIN 4161 Three (3) credit hours

This course will examine topics in applied ergonomics and occupational biomechanics. Lectures will be used to present ergonomic assessment tools and present current research directives in the area of occupational biomechanics and prevention of workplace musculoskeletal injuries. Development of the skills required to identify occupational ergonomic concerns, perform biomechanical analyses of musculoskeletal demands and modifications of work tasks to reduce musculoskeletal demands will be emphasized through practical experiences.

Prerequisite: KIN 2062, KIN 3161, or permission of the instructor.

What you will learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and discuss the scope of the field of ergonomics and gain an appreciation for the role of occupational biomechanics
  • Differentiate models of injury mechanism
  • Determine the biomechanical stresses on the body during work activities
  • Use assessment tools for lifting capacity evaluation, posture analysis and upper extremity disorders
  • Assess the scope of industrial injuries with specific attention to lower back and upper limb injuries and their mitigation through ergonomic design
  • Integrate kinesiological knowledge in dealing with industrial issues pertaining to human interaction with the work environment
  • Conduct ergonomic related assessments and provide educated recommendations for improvement

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

  • 4 x Assignments (50% total)
  • 8 x Module quizzes (16% total)
  • 1 x Midcourse exam (14%)
  • 1 x Final exam (20%)

The exam(s) for this course will be invigilated on an approved date using Respondus e-proctoring software (LockDown Browser and Monitor). This is a free tool provided with this course; a webcam is required. More information will be given once you have been registered.

Fees and payments

There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition and fees. This fee is non-refundable once the add/drop date has passed within the term the course is registered in. Please note this fee will be automatically added and included in your term tuition fees.
