Intervention Strategies and Programs for People Who Batter

Subject Course No. Credit Value
Family Violence Issues FVI 3006 Three (3) credit hours

This is a core course for the Family Violence Issues Certificate Program at UNB but can be taken separately from the Certificate Program. Despite the prevalence of abuse and violence within relationships, and the range of intervention programs available (including those for men who are court-mandated, arrested, or voluntarily seeking help), outcomes remain mixed. Few interventions have demonstrated consistent success in significantly reducing abusive behaviour. Throughout this course, we will examine the complexities and challenges of addressing IPV at both the individual and within broader social systems. We will explore how ideas about violence intersect with social norms, perceptions about gender, and the language we use. We will also look at how intervention strategies intersect with healthcare, legal systems, and community resources, and how these efforts can either disrupt or reinforce cycles of harm.

This course is cross listed as SOCI 3006. Credit can only be obtained for one of FVI 3006 and SOCI 3006.
