Economics ECON 3103 Three (3) credit hours

This is an introductory level undergraduate course that will introduce you to the theory of money, history of monetary systems, deposit creation, central and commercial banking, financial market, stock exchange, monetary policy and foreign exchange market. Upon completion of this course, students should be better prepared to make investment decisions in integrated financial markets.

Prerequisite: All students taking this course must have already taken: 3 ch of first-year macroeconomics (ECON 1023 or ECON 1024 or ECON 1073 or an instructor-approved substitute).

What you will learn

This course is designed to help you:

  • Understand the money market, stock market, and foreign exchange market.
  • Develop expertise in making investment decisions and learn about financial instruments, financial markets, financial institutions and financial crises.
  • Explore who decides the interest rates, money supply in the economy and the structure and functions of the Central Bank in Canada, the US and other (selected) countries.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

  • 13 (best 10 will be counted) x quizzes (20% total)
  • 1 x mid-course test (10%)
  • 1 x monetary policy assignment (8%)
  • Participation in discussion board questions (2%)
  • 1 x final exam (invigilated, 60%)

The exam(s) for this course will be invigilated on an approved date using Respondus e-proctoring software (LockDown Browser and Monitor). This is a free tool provided with this course, a webcam is required. More information will be given once you have been registered.

Fees and payments

There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition and fees. This fee is non-refundable once the add/drop date has passed within the term the course is registered in. Please note this fee will be automatically added and included in your term tuition fees.
