Magic in the Ancient World

Classic & Ancient History AWS 3625 Three (3) credit hours

Explore magic beliefs and practices in the ancient Near East and Mediterranean from 2000 BCE to 500 CE, focusing on Mesopotamia, Egypt, Israel, Iran, and the Graeco-Roman world. Consider how "magic" was intertwined with religion, medicine, mathematics, and politics, and reflect on how magic contributes to intellectual history and the history of science. Credit cannot be counted for both AWS 3625 and CLAS 3625.

What you will learn

This course is designed to help you:

  • Learn to interpret ancient texts and objects and thinking critically about how knowledge of past cultures is produced.
  • Become proficient at selecting and using academic sources and digital tools for the study of the ancient world.
  • Understand intellectual history from cross-cultural perspectives and build skills in interdisciplinary research methods.

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

  • 2 x assignments (30% total)
  • 10 x module quizzes (30% total)
  • Midcourse exam (invigilated, 10%)
  • Final exam (invigilated, 30%)

The exam(s) for this course will be invigilated on an approved date using Respondus e-proctoring software (LockDown Browser). This is a free tool provided with this course. More information will be given once you have been registered.

Fees and payments

There is a $150 non-refundable/non-transferable online fee per course in addition to applicable tuition and fees. This fee is non-refundable once the add/drop date has passed within the term the course is registered in. Please note this fee will be automatically added and included in your term tuition fees.
