Maryse New Brunswick

With our specialized prosthetic solutions, Maryse is able to enjoy her active lifestyle, which includes swimming, and regular workouts at her favourite gym.

I wear my myoelectric prosthesis every day - it is now a part of me. Whether at work, at school or at home, there is nothing I can’t do. - Maryse

Background

Twenty-year-old Maryse, from New Brunswick, was born missing her right arm below the elbow. She has been visiting our clinic for fittings since she was six months old. Maryse is currently in her fourth year of university, studying to become a Social Worker and working part time in a daycare.

Process

As an adult client, Maryse comes to our clinic less frequently than when she was younger. She visits for adjustments to the fit of her prosthesis if she gains or loses weight, and she has a new prosthesis made when the prosthetic hand wears out and needs to be replaced. She recently had a new prosthesis made with a newer, faster, stronger hand as her previous hand was well worn from daily use. She also has a passive prosthesis which helps her for swimming. Maryse is active at her local gym, and has requested a special device to help grip the handles on the weight machines.

Outcome

Maryse uses her myoelectric prosthesis the majority of the time, sometimes up to twelve hours a day. She now has a special device for use at the gym, which she reports works very well to facilitate an equal workout for both sides of her body, and helps her to maintain an active lifestyle.

I enjoy going to the clinic, because I feel welcome there. They understand how significant it is to feel comfortable in your prosthesis, and they always find solutions to resolve any problems. They know how to make an amputee’s life so much easier. – Maryse
