For over a decade, we have had the support of the chairpersons of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child to create and pilot child rights indicators tools for all children under 18.
In 2006, the Early Childhood Rights Indicators (ECRI) Project was created by an international team of experts led by Dr. Ziba Vaghri and the late Dr. Clyde Hertzmann known as the General Comment 7 (GC7) Team. Their aim was to facilitate the monitoring and implementation of the CRC for children aged 0-8 years using the ECRI tool. Following the successful pilots of ECRI in Tanzania (2009-2010) and Chile (2010-2012), the tool was piloted in British Columbia, Canada (2015-2017). The BC pilot was led by an expert steering committee.
The GlobalChild project is the extension of this decade of work and includes all children aged 0-18 years. Using existing validated indicator sets created by different agencies and non-government organizations and creating new indicators where there have not been any developed, the GlobalChild team has built a platform that will facilitate monitoring all rights of children as specified in the CRC. GlobalChild is a 5+5 years project. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is funding the first 5 years. The GlobalChild project is guided by an international steering committee of diverse experts.
