Purchase regalia

To purchase regalia, specific to the university from which you graduated, you can do so through Gaspard at grad_sales@gaspard.ca or by calling 1-800-380-8214.

You can also purchase UNB-specific regalia.

Academic dress

Academic dress is worn at graduation ceremonies and includes a gown, cap (mortarboard or beefeater tam), and hood. The regalia worn by each participant depends upon the academic level attained: Bachelor, Master and Doctorate. See a guide to UNB’s ceremonial dress.

For the Bachelor’s degree recipients, the tassel dangles on the left side of the mortarboard. (This will move to the right side of the cap after your photograph has been taken and after leaving the platform). For Master’s degree recipients, the tassel dangles on the right side of the mortarboard and remains on that side. The top of the cap should rest flat on the head. Those receiving their PhDs wear a beefeater cap.

Bachelor’s hoods are worn with the colour showing only on the left shoulder. Undergraduands receiving more than one degree wear the hood representing their first degree and carry the hood for their second degree on their left arm. Doctoral graduands also carry their hoods on the left arm. Master’s and PhD hoods are worn open on both sides.

UNB offers two distinct graduation stoles to recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures and identities of First Nation, Inuit and Métis students, as well as African students and those of African descent. These stoles serve as a meaningful symbol of heritage and culture, while marking this significant academic milestone. Stoles may be borrowed to wear at your ceremony at no cost and can be selected on the rental regalia form.

First Nations, Inuit and Métis graduands are invited to wear academic dress over their cultural regalia. Members of the military and the RCMP may wear academic dress over their dress uniform.

During graduation ceremonies, graduands are required to wear the official academic regalia. Items such as non-regalia stoles, pins, flowers or other visible additions may be worn before and after the ceremony while celebrating with friends and family. During the ceremony, these items are to be worn discreetly under the gown.

UNB is committed to fostering an inclusive environment that respects and affirms the diverse identifies of all graduating students. We recognize that graduation is a significant milestone, and we support each student's ambition to express their identify. Graduands who require an approval or wish to discuss their needs in relation to these requirements, whether for religious, cultural, ancestry related, health-related, or other protected reasons, are encouraged to email graduation@unb.ca by April 27.

UNB asks that graduands do not take personal belongings such as purses, backpacks, jackets, flowers, confetti, or balloons into the venue or on the platform.

Graduands should consider the distance covered by the procession when selecting footwear.

Gowns and hoods must be returned immediately following the ceremony. For Bachelor’s and Master’s degree recipients, the souvenir mortarboard cap and tassel are yours to keep. For PhD recipients, the beefeater caps must be returned.
