This report represents the fifth update in our immigrant retention series, which draws on linked administrative data to calculate retention rates for primary applicants who arrived in New Brunswick through federal and provincial immigration streams. Drawing on the most recently available data, this update examines how many immigrants who landed in New Brunswick in 2022 were still living in the province one year later.
The study finds that 79% of 2022 arrivals were still living in NB after one year, reflecting a return to a long-term trend observed before the COVID-19 pandemic. It shows that retention varies by immigration stream, country of origin, education level, language, and settlement region. Retention was highest among family-sponsored immigrants and lowest among those arriving from India. Regional variation was also observed, with Moncton receiving the most newcomers and the Fundy and Capital regions showing the largest gains in retention.
