LiDAR for Forestry and Environmental Management

Subject Course No. Credit Value
GIS/Forestry FOR 5284 Three (3) credit hours

This course introduces the core concepts, terminology and theory behind airborne laser scanning before leading students through the preparation of LiDAR point cloud datasets for use in ArcGIS (system requirements) where they will be visualized, filtered and used to create common useful derivatives towards solving spatial questions. Then, using the power of the point cloud, students statistically analyze and stratify LAS datasets to glean additional information on forest composition, including basic enhanced forest inventory metric derivation using ArcGIS, FUSION, LAStools and MS Excel (system requirements).

Instructor: Jae Ogilvie (please contact the instructor if you need an up-to-date syllabus)
Prerequisite: Basic GIS Knowledge, FOR5281 or comparable is recommended, but not required.

Why take this course?

  • Students learn how to query, download and prepare LiDAR point cloud information for use in ArcGIS to visualize point cloud information create useful derivative datasets (i.e. bare earth, full feature, canopy height, elevation contours, etc.).
  • Combining point cloud information and its derivatives, natural resource/landscape-related questions will be assessed using LiDAR, including watershed delineation, land use derivation, basic crown segmentation, etc.
  • Using ArcGIS, FUSION and MS Excel, students will explore the power of the point cloud for derivation of forest composition information, including the derivation of basic enhanced forest inventory (EFI) metrics.
