This course introduces students to biological concepts that apply to everyday life. Topics are chosen to help students understand the molecular interactions that are essential for life, the cellular processes that are required for survival and reproduction, and the importance of these to human health, industry and the environment.
Note: This course is not open to students who have already received credit for BIOL1001 or BIOL1009.

Why take this course?
As an asynchronous course, lectures are fully recorded and the course is flexible – students are able to decide when it is most convenient to write quizzes, whether to submit either of the bonus assignments, and when to move on to the next topic in the course.
Students will learn about the structure of DNA and the process of DNA replication, and build upon this knowledge to explore interesting topics in Genetics (including mutations and inherited genetic disorders), Biotechnology (including gene cloning and gene editing), and Cancer Biology.
Students will learn about the human immune system, and use that knowledge to to learn about helpful and harmful bacteria, as well as viruses and vaccines. Recent news articles from main-stream media as well as cutting-edge research findings are incorporated throughout the course for interest and to demonstrate relevance.
Course details
Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.
