Ever wanted to learn Filipino while discovering the rich culture of the Philippines? Whether you're planning a trip, have Filipino family or friends, work with Filipino colleagues, or are simply curious about the culture, this course is the perfect place to begin!
In this fun and interactive course, you'll learn practical Filipino words and phrases that you can use in everyday conversations. We'll practice greetings, introductions, common expressions, numbers, food, shopping, travel, and simple conversations to help you build confidence speaking the language.
But language is only part of the experience! Throughout the course, we'll also explore Filipino culture, traditions, festivals, family values, customs, music, food, and everyday life. You'll gain a deeper understanding of what makes Filipino culture unique while learning how language and culture go hand in hand.
Classes will include interactive activities, games, role-playing, cultural discussions, and opportunities to practice speaking in a relaxed and welcoming environment. No previous knowledge of Tagalog is required. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to learn!

Engelbert "Jay" Joaquin is a certified teacher with more than 20 years of teaching experience in international and Canadian educational settings. He earned his Bachelor of Education degree in the Philippines and completed additional coursework at the University of New Brunswick toward obtaining his New Brunswick teaching certificate.
Jay is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Management, further strengthening his commitment to lifelong learning and educational excellence. Throughout his career, he has worked with learners of diverse ages, cultures, and backgrounds, developing a passion for creating engaging, inclusive, and welcoming learning environments. He currently teaches in New Brunswick and enjoys helping learners build confidence through practical and interactive learning experiences.
As a proud Filipino, Jay is passionate about sharing not only the Filipino language but also the traditions, customs, food, and values that make Filipino culture unique. He believes that learning a language is about building meaningful connections with people and understanding their stories. Outside the classroom, Jay enjoys community involvement, crafting, camping, and creating memorable experiences through art and celebration.
