Personal Information Protection

The University of New Brunswick is committed to protecting the personal information and privacy of all students, faculty and staff.   The collection, use and disclosure of personal information for UNB operations, programming and activities follows the UNB Policy for the Protection of Personal Information and Privacy (PPIP). 

What is Personal Information?

Personal information is the recorded information about an indentifiable individual.  Found in just about any format, including paper, emails, or audio and visual recordings, personal information includes information about an individual's :

  • name;
  • home address or electronic mail address or home telephone or fax number;
  • age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status or family status;
  • ancestry, race, colour, nationality or national or ethnic origin;
  • religion or creed or religious belief, association or activity;
  • personal health, blood type, fingerprints or hereditary characteristics;
  • political beliefs, association or activity;
  • education, employment or occupation; or educational, employment or occupational history;
  • source of income or financial circumstances, activities or history;
  • criminal history, including regulatory offences;
  • personal view or opinions, except if they are about another person
  • views or opinions expressed about the individual by another person, and;
  • identifying number, symbol or similar assigned to an individual.

NOTE: Names, business addresses, business email addresses and business telephone number of UNB faculty and staff are publicly available.  Student information is available as outlined in the University Regulations Part X, Confidentiality, Security and Release of Student Academic Records.

What is Privacy Protection?

By following the guidelines given in UNB's Policy for the Protection of Personal Information and Privacy (PPIP) in conjunction with University Regulations, privacy protection comes in the form of the efforts taken when collecting and working with personal information to ensure individuals are knowledgeable of collection and use, the information is used for the purposes it was intended and that it is securely stored while in our care. 

Privacy Officers

The University Registrar Fredericton and University Registrar Saint John, serve as Campus Privacy Officers.  Along with the University Secretary and University Secretariat staff, UNB Registrars are both available as a first point of contact for questions or concerns related to the personal privacy and the management of personal information.
