Information for CE PEP Students

Introduction

We hope that you will find your PEP work term to be a productive and useful experience. Should you encounter any problems during your work term, please remember that the Faculty of Engineering Co-op/PEP Coordinator, may be able to help (see address below).

1. As a PEP student you are required to:

• Complete the Faculty of Engineering Co-op/PEP information sheet at the beginning of your work term.
• Inform the Faculty of Engineering Co-op/PEP Office of any change in your mailing address, e-mail address, your home or work phone numbers, etc., which occur during your work term.
• Officially register as a UNB PEP student in September and January (see the note below). This will require you to pay a registration fee for each regular academic term (usually 2) encompassed by the PEP period. For 2002-2003, this fee is $700.00 per academic term. There are other fees that you will also be responsible for, eg. student health plan fees, etc.
• Perform your work duties diligently and to the best of your ability, and maintain a good work performance record.
• Submit a report outlining your job functions and describing your work term experience upon completion of the PEP work period to the Faculty of Engineering Co-op/PEP Office. This report is due within one week of resuming classes at UNB.
  
  NOTE: In August, the UNB Faculty of Engineering and the Registrar's Office will send you official notification of your PEP registration fee requirements using the address you have provided. Fees are payable by cash or cheque to The University of New Brunswick (you may also pay by credit card via Fax or phone), and are due at the start of each term.
  
  

2. For PEP students in good standing, the University will:

• Maintain your status on the Registrar's list as a full-time student
• Place a suitable notation on your transcript in recognition of your PEP work term.
• Provide student health insurance coverage on the same basis as for full-time students on campus. Note that a separate fee is required for this in accordance with UNB Student Union regulations.
• Provide liaison and support activities through the Faculty of Engineering Co-op/PEP Coordinator, including periodic visits to meet with you and to interact with company personnel at your workplace in order to assess the effectiveness of your PEP experience and monitor the work being undertaken.
• Provide information and assistance to facilitate your return to full-time studies, involving registration, CE 4983/4993 Senior Report topics, program/course changes within the Department, etc.
  
  

3. During your work term, your PEP employer will:

• Provide the opportunity for you to obtain quality professional experience by assigning you meaningful engineering work.
• Provide engineering supervision.
• Provide paid employment.
• Assess your PEP work performance and provide reports to UNB.
  
  

4. Part-Time Courses:

While on PEP, you may take one or more approved courses for credit on a part-time basis provided certain conditions are met, including the following:

• There should be no adverse impact on your day to day job performance.
• Prior approval from the UNB Registrar and CE Department must be obtained in order to use the course(s) for credit towards your degree requirements.
• The regular part-time course fee must be paid in addition to the PEP registration fee.
• Non-UNB courses may be used for credit towards your degree requirements provided that approval and transfer credit regulations are satisfied.
  
  

5. Student Loans:

Although students are not eligible for student loan funding while on a work term, PEP students can maintain interest free status during that time by completing the appropriate forms. These forms are available at UNB Financial Services. You should be aware that:

1. A different form is required for the Federal government loan program and the Provincial government loan program.
2. UNB Financial Services has copies of both forms available.
3. You should provide the appropriate certified form(s) to the bank(s) administering your student loan(s) prior to November 30 of the year that you go on PEP.

To obtain your form(s), send a letter or Fax to UNB Financial Services (Fax: 506-453-4572), with your name, student number, and full mailing address, along with your request for the UNB-certified Federal government schedule 2 form, or the Provincial government schedule 2 form, or both as required. These will be certified and mailed to you, whereupon you should then complete and sign them and take them to the bank(s) administering your student loan(s).

6. Computer Accounts:

UNB computer accounts are maintained as active accounts for all students until a designated "lockout" date in September of each year. Prior to this date it is necessary for you to "claim" your account(s) in accordance with University policies. To claim an account, you must sign on to the appropriate system with the user-id claim (no password is required), and supply your student number, your PIN, your birthdate, and a password of your choosing.

If you need to confirm that your PIN is correct, you can call Theresa Murray in the Department of Civil Engineering Office at 506-453-4521. Your PIN is required to access on-line services at UNB.

7. Senior Report Projects:

A negotiated portion of the work undertaken while on PEP may be utilized as part of your Senior Report project for academic credit via the CE 4983/4993 course.
