d. Full Depth Reclamation of Asphalt Pavement
Asphalt pavement can be effectively recycled with soil solidification practices to re-use pavement
materials and reconstruct a high quality surface on site. The chemical and physical properties of
Class C fly ash allow for full depth reclamation of pavement, which involves pulverizing the
existing Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and most or all of the base course layer to produce a uniform
blend. A layer of Class C, self-cementing Fly Ash spread evenly over the pulverized material is
pulverized a second time to achieve a homogenous mixture of desired density; water is added to
obtain proper moisture content (6-8%). Compaction with a vibratory pad-foot roller, grading and
then compaction with a smooth drum roller complete the recycling and solidification processes.
The strengthening properties of the ash result in an enhanced and solid road base, which allows
for thickness of the final HMA overlay to be reduced without compromising the performance or
durability of the finished surface.
Road bases solidified with self-cementing Fly Ash demonstrate structure values over twice that of
natural crushed aggregate bases and provide the added benefit of being open to traffic during
construction. Full depth reclamation provides a high quality pavement structure quickly and
economically. On-site recycling of existing road base materials reduces costs, avoiding
unnecessary use of virgin materials or landfill.
