Faculty of Science special lecture: Black holes: theory, observations and quantum aspects

3:30 p.m. | Tilley Hall Room 102, Fredericton

The Faculty of Science is honoured to invite the UNB community to a presentation by Dr. Edward Wilson-Ewing, our inaugural recipient of the Fritz Grein Science Research Award.

Black holes were initially predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity and their existence is now supported by strong observational evidence. Dr. Edward Wilson-Ewing will explain what is known about black holes, from both theory and observations, and then discuss what remains unknown. In particular, Hawking’s information loss problem suggests that quantum effects must be included to fully understand black holes, and he will end by presenting some current work in this direction.

The Fritz Grein Science Research Award was the vision of Professor Emeritus Fritz Grein, Chemistry. It was established to provide support for the research activities of promising junior faculty members in the Faculty of Science on the Fredericton campus.
