Gender pay gaps in the health professions: do health systems reflect the social inequalities they are meant to address?

Category(s): Health, Economy and Labour
Status: Active
Principal: Neeru Gupta
Project Number: Q0033

Description

Understanding and addressing the gender wage gap remains a concern for the recruitment and retention of health professionals to meet changing healthcare needs. Differences in earnings may reflect broader social inequalities, with implications for workforce productivity and health human resources planning.

Drawing on Canadian population census data, this research examines earnings differentials within and across different highly skilled health professions, considering gender and other intersecting characteristics which may influence earnings distinctly from occupational qualifications, geographical contexts, and other traditionally analyzed labour force factors. Comparisons with other fields, including selected female-dominated versus male-dominated professions, provide a broader perspective on the relative competitiveness of the health sector for attracting and retaining talent.
