Certificate in Leadership Studies

Leadership skills for any field, any future

The Certificate in Leadership Studies is designed for students who want to strengthen their leadership skills in real community contexts, whether in not-for-profit organizations, business, government, or grassroots initiatives.

You will develop the ability to build strong relationships, work across differences, and influence positive change within groups and communities. Leadership is not limited to one profession. It is a set of skills and practices that expand your options in any sector you choose to work or volunteer in.

This certificate is open to all UNB students and can be added to almost any degree. It is also a required component of the Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS) program.

What you’ll learn

The program focuses on four leadership areas:

  • Leading self
  • Leading projects
  • Leading with others
  • Leading others

Together, these areas help you build the confidence and practical skills needed to navigate complexity and lead ethically in diverse environments.

Why add leadership studies to your degree?

Leadership education strengthens your ability to adapt, innovate, and respond to real-world challenges. Students in the certificate program deepen their understanding of social diversity and complexity while gaining tools they can apply immediately in their academic, professional, and community lives.

Every organization needs people who understand the fundamentals of leadership. This certificate broadens your opportunities and prepares you to step into those roles.

Program requirements

Students must complete 15 credit hours with a minimum grade of C in their LEAD courses:

  • LEAD 1001- Leadership Foundations (required)
  • One of: LEAD 1011/ LEAD 1062 / LEAD 2001
  • At least 3ch of 3000 or 4000 level LEAD courses
  • At least 6ch additional LEAD credits

With approval, up to 3ch from other faculties with relevant leadership content may count toward the certificate.

Who can enrol?

  • UNB students in any faculty
  • Students in the Bachelor of Integrated Studies (required component)
  • Students taking individual LEAD courses for credit toward their degree
  • Non-UNB students registering in the certificate as a standalone program
