Health Systems Lab

About the lab

Our mission

The Systems Thinking for Health Innovation Lab is committed to advancing health equity for vulnerable populations by transforming how primary care is designed, delivered, and experienced.

Through collaborative, interdisciplinary research grounded in systems thinking, we map complexity, uncover system strengths and gaps, and co-design integrated, person-centered care models.

In partnership with communities, care providers, and policymakers, we generate actionable insights that drive sustainable healthcare transformation in New Brunswick and beyond.

How we work

We examine, model, and analyze complex care processes across health and social systems using a systems thinking methodology, the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM). This approach allows us to map system dynamics, revealing how care is actually delivered and experienced, often in contrast to idealized workflows.

We use participatory approaches that engage healthcare and social service professionals, community members and service users as active research partners. We gather qualitative data through semi-structured interviews, focus groups, document review and workshops. We also use thematic analysis to identify patterns, barriers, and opportunities for improvement.

By capturing the complexity and variability of real-world practice, we work to co-design practical solutions and integrated care models that reflect the lived realities of those who deliver and receive care.

Our areas of focus

  • Identifying system fragmentation and coordination gaps across care sectors
  • Strengthening effective practices by uncovering and supporting what already works well
  • Co-developing policy recommendations to support integrated, person-centered care
  • Supporting care redesign through insights grounded in direct service realities
  • Improving access and healthcare system navigation for populations facing structural barriers to care

Who we work with

The Systems Thinking for Health Innovation Lab engages a diverse range of collaborators and knowledge users. Our work is grounded in real-world practice and is designed to generate impact across research, clinical care, education and policy.

Our primary audiences

We collaborate with scholars across disciplines exploring health systems, complexity science, integrated care and health equity.

Our work supports interdisciplinary research and model-based analysis using systems thinking and FRAM.

We work directly with primary care providers, nurses, other allied health professionals to analyze and improve care processes.

Together, we co-design practical solutions that reflect the realities of frontline service delivery.

We offer opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to gain hands-on research experience, explore systems thinking and contribute to meaningful health system change.

We provide system-level insights and evidence-informed recommendations to support integrated care, health equity, and sustainable transformation.

Our models and findings help inform policy and strategic planning across sectors.

Community organizations and advocates

We partner with organizations serving newcomers, people experiencing homelessness and other underserved populations to ensure our research is community-driven and impact-focused.

We pursue high-impact, collaborative research aligned with priorities in equity, access and care integration—making us a strong partner for funders seeking measurable and meaningful outcomes.
