Person trying to sleep

This webinar was part of our 2021-2022 "Let's Talk Safety" webinar series

Covid-19 changed our lives forever. What it means in the short run is that many of us are telecommuting and completing our work in entirely new ways. As new research is emerging, and as I'm sure your personal experiences have told you, we find that working from home does not necessarily decrease your overall stress or increase your ability to get the sleep you need. In fact, 98% of people surveyed said they developed new sleep problems after the lockdown and over 68% of people said they feel stress or find it hard to sleep.

Not getting enough sleep can impact our health, our immunity, our mood, our ability to be productive, and even increase the likelihood of getting into a car accident or, for those of us still in the workplace, a workplace incident. By the end of this session everyone will be empowered to better understand the risks fatigue creates and will be provided the practical strategies, tools and countermeasures needed to better manage fatigue during these unusual times we are living in.

This webinar was part of our 2023-2024 "Let's Talk Safety" webinar series

Hand injuries are one of the most common workplace injuries and yet most are preventable. Workers' Compensation Board statistics in Canada1 reveal there were more that 250,000 lost-time injuries in Canada last year. The National Safety Council's review of the data2 suggests 18% of lost-time claims are hand-injury or finger-injury related.

These injuries are prevalent across all industries, including office jobs, construction, manufacturing, and every industry where workers use their hands for all sorts of work. It may sound obvious, but gloves are the most common type of personal protective equipment to help with the prevention of hand and finger injuries.

Nowadays, technology exists such that there are hundreds of types of gloves available and that includes one for the hazards of every job and task. Employers need to know more and be ready to include formalized hand safety programming in their occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS).

Human and Organizational performance (HOP) is a global movement towards using the social sciences to better understand how to design resilient work systems and make workplaces safer. It is referred to as the “New View” by some. People who are “all in” are referred to as “Hopsters”. Human and Organizational Performance is seen as a powerful new approach to improving the performance of both individuals and organizations. The belief is that by adopting HOP principles, organizations can create safer, more productive, and more engaging work environments, while also reducing costs and improving overall performance.

Is HOP just the next fad in safety or is it the next big thing in safety? In this webinar, we will review the origins of the HOP concept, describe the key principles of HOP, and discuss strategies for operationalizing this philosophy.

A key aspect of the return to a healthy workplace post-COVID requires us to consider integrating all aspects of our employees' health. This integrated thinking includes introducing the policies, programs, and practices that integrate protection from work-related health and safety hazards with promotion of injury and illness prevention efforts to advance our employees' well-being.

In this webinar, you will:

Worker writing down notes

This webinar was part of our 2022-2023 "Let's Talk Safety" webinar series

The pandemic has taught us a lot, and one thing it has taught us is that we all have the capacity for fear. But the pandemic also taught us how to be more human, how to be supportive of each other, how to be patient, how to learn about new risks, and how to build information about COVID into the management of our day-to-day lives.

Risk communication leads us through a process where we examine the facts, identify the stakeholders, speak with the stakeholders, understand their bias, provide more information to them, and help them to adjust their bias to be more in line with the current thinking. Risk communication has to do with people, how we think, and what we know about risks.

In this webinar, you will:

  • Learn the foundations of risk communication
  • Use the pandemic as a case study and review what went well and what went wrong
  • Discuss concepts of risk versus safe, and how fear can be measured to guide strategies for better risk communication

Wooden blocks that say "Safe work"

This webinar was part of our 2022-2023 "Let's Talk Safety" webinar series

We have turned the corner on Covid-19 and there is reason for hope and optimism. Things are slowly returning to normal as the virus moves from pandemic to endemic. Companies are working towards getting things back to normal. The big "reboot" is on, and this applies to our safety programs as much as anything. As part of the post-pandemic safety renaissance or reboot, we need to be reminded of the basics.

During this webinar, you will learn:

  • The foundations of safety management
  • The top 10 safety program elements that need your attention in the coming year

Safety practitioner on the field

This webinar was part of our 2022-2023 "Let's Talk Safety" webinar series

Everyone in the safety field is working towards the same objective—reducing workplace incidents and the associated costs and human suffering.

In fact, many companies have formally declared this intent with catchphrases for the programming such as "Zero Harm" or the "Journey to Zero". Operations and safety teams in organizations are already overloaded with responsibilities, but with the addition of these new "zero harm" goals, the management and advancement of the safety culture is being added to the list.

How are we supposed to manage safety culture along with all the other safety "hats" we're supposed to wear?

In this "how-to" webinar, the process and mechanics for advancing the safety culture in 10 (not so) easy steps are explored. Using a case-study approach, you will learn:

  • What is safety culture, how do we measure it, and how can we advance it?
  • What are the linkages between safety culture and safety performance?
  • How can we employ a more effective business partnering arrangement to be successful?
  • What are the tools needed to achieve the necessary transformation?

Photo of safety workers with protective eyewear on

This webinar was part of our 2023-2024 "Let's Talk Safety" webinar series

Employees work in a wide range of work environments, many of which create a risk of eye injury. A key to preventing eye injuries in these hazardous environments is recognizing the hazards and implementing control strategies such as safety eyewear.

According to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, more than 700 Canadian employees per day sustain eye injuries on the job, resulting in lost time and/or temporary or permanent vision loss. Often these incidents also result in head and face injuries, increasing the lost days away from work. In most of these cases, the employer of these injured people had a safety program in place requiring them to assess hazards and use appropriate controls, including safety eyewear.

The technology associated with the available safety eyewear means that there is a best choice for every situation. Employers have lots of options when it comes to selecting the safety eyewear best suited to protect their employees from the hazards associated with work. Employers need to know more and be prepared to make the right choices when it comes to eye safety wear.

Thirty or forty years ago, environmental resource use wasn’t something on which there was a lot of focus. However, as we hear more about climate change -- and with an increased focus on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) -- the focus on resource use has increased. This is one area where Safety Professionals are becoming more engaged as companies look at ways to better manage their resource use. The Environmental Resource Management course is a good starting point for Safety Professionals to learn more about environmental resource use.
