There are many things that you can do in your everyday lives to reduce energy consumption and damage to the environment.
Transportation
Motor vehicles are a large source of greenhouse gases. Try using public transportation or car-pooling. On nice days, walk or bike to your destination.
Laundry
Run the washer only when you have enough laundry to do a full load.
Ninety percent of the energy your washer uses is to heat water. Wash your laundry with cold water. There are now special laundry detergents designed to use cold water.
Water
Leaky faucets over time can waste a significant amount of water.
Flow controlled shower heads and faucets also reduce the amount of water that is used.
Buying appliances that use heat water efficiently will save energy and money over time.
Cooking
Use a microwave rather than an oven when possible. Microwaves have been proven to be 70-80% more energy efficient than ovens.
Lighting
Energy efficient bulbs are more expensive although they will last significantly longer and will save you money in the long run.
It is a myth that turning a light off and on uses more energy than just leaving the light of if you are leaving a room for only a couple of minutes. Always turn off lights when you leave a room.
