Everybody Needs to be Involved

There are many things that you can do in your everyday lives to reduce energy consumption and damage to the environment.

Transportation

  • Motor vehicles are a large source of greenhouse gases. Try using public transportation or car-pooling. On nice days, walk or bike to your destination.

Laundry

  • Run the washer only when you have enough laundry to do a full load.
  • Ninety percent of the energy your washer uses is to heat water. Wash your laundry with cold water. There are now special laundry detergents designed to use cold water.

Water

  • Leaky faucets over time can waste a significant amount of water.
  • Flow controlled shower heads and faucets also reduce the amount of water that is used.
  • Buying appliances that use heat water efficiently will save energy and money over time.

Cooking

  • Use a microwave rather than an oven when possible. Microwaves have been proven to be 70-80% more energy efficient than ovens.

Lighting

  • Energy efficient bulbs are more expensive although they will last significantly longer and will save you money in the long run.
  • It is a myth that turning a light off and on uses more energy than just leaving the light of if you are leaving a room for only a couple of minutes. Always turn off lights when you leave a room.
