Congratulations to our TIP 2009 Winners!

On April 3, 2009, fourteen innovative students in eight teams participated in the our 3rd  Annual Technology Innovation Pitch (TIP) Challenge at the Wu Conference Centre.  Each team, represented by one ‘pitcher’, presented and defended their innovative ideas to a panel of four experienced judges.

The Harold H. Bulmer Memorial Technology Innovation Pitch (TIP) Prize was created by TME Chair Linda Bulmer, through funds donated by family/friends and Radian6 Technologies Inc., in  memory of her father, who she says “exemplified the spirit of intentional entrepreneurship, persistence in pursuit of goals, sensing and adapting to change and never, ever giving up.”

Pictured, from left to right are: TME Chair Linda Bulmer, Marcel LeBrun (Judge), Nancy Mathis (Judge), Jake Arsenault (Judge), Laura Malone and Jane Simmons (2nd place winners), Samir Kadhim (1st place winner), Anmol Bansal (3rd place), and Michael Arbow (Judge).

The first place prize was awarded to Samir Kadhim for his convincing pitch for CorrCheck, a corrosion monitoring device.  Jane Simmons and Laura Malone took home the second place prize for their compelling pitch for an adaptor that converts water bottles to simple irrigation systems.  Ed Cullinan and Anmol Bansal placed third for their pitch to introduce the use of nitrogen-producing biodegradable plastic bags in New Brunswick.  Winners and all participants were awarded Reality Check, an “all-in-one guide to starting and operating great organizations” by best selling author Guy Kawasaki.  An opportunity to dine and build relationships with the judges/sponsors at a celebration dinner immediately followed the event.

Judges for the event were: Michael Arbow, Capital Market Specialist with the New Brunswick Securities Commission; Nancy Mathis,  Executive Director of the Wallace McCain Institute, UNB; Jake Arsenault, CEO of Inversa Ltd.; and Marcel LeBrun, CEO of Radian6 Technologies, Inc.

We thank our very supportive event sponsors which included the New Brunswick Securities Commission, New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, the International Business and Entrepreneurship Centre, UNB, and Enterprise Fredericton.

Students Meet Entrepreneur Terry Matthews

Several of our TME students enjoyed an inspirational and educational presentation with Sir Terry Matthews available to UNB students on the morning of March 25th.  Selected students also had the added opportunity to attend lunch and openly talk with the serial entrepreneur, billionaire and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) mogul.

“In his address Terry Matthews discussed his vision and the role that he is playing in creating sustainable innovation here in Canada and elsewhere.”

During the campus visit, Sir Terry recounted several captivating experiences using the power of story to pass on his valuable tips to the aspiring entrepreneurs.  His messages reinforced the merits of hard work and persistence to get and stay out on the entrepreneurial edge.  He expanded to further drive home the importance of team, collaboration, consistent communication and shared ownership of the venture.  Sir Terry also advised the students on the essence of timing and keeping their venture agile to make timely moves.

Students described their interaction with Sir Terry Matthews as comfortable and unforgettable.

TME Student Enters the Dragon’s Den on CBC

Congratulations to TME students Kumaran Thillainadarajah (BSE-CMPE, YR4) and Chris Marshall (BBA-MKT, YR4) who both led winning teams at the recent New Brunswick Innovation Foundation's Breakthru Competition.

Chris and fellow team members Robert Morrow and Edgar Gallibois of KnowCharge Inc. took the Silver Prize of $60,000 for their conductive paper technology that "provides an exclusive, cost-comparitive and environmentally sustainable alternative to plastic-based protective packaging."

Kumaran's team won the Young Entrepreneur and Best Presentation awards, along with the CBC People's Choice award (determined by an online vote) earning them $62,000 and the chance to pitch their Smart Skin technology on the CBC TV show the Dragon's Den.  They also shared the Best Student Venture award with KnowCharge.  Smart Skin is an artifical touch-sensitive skin for prosthetic limbs and other applications.

We are pleased to acknowledge their success in this prestigious provincial competition, and know that their persistence will lead to future growth and more exciting opportunities.  We will keep you informed about Kumaran’s debut on Dragon’s Den representing Smart Skin the weekend of May 22nd.

Entrepreneurial Finance to be Updated

TME 3013 – Entrepreneurial Finance – will be undergoing revisions over the next few months in preparation for the fall term.  Classroom instructor Carl Burgess wants to enrich the in class experience by incorporating “computer lab tutorials focused on building financial spreadsheets and likely a group case study involving a class presentation”.  Guest speakers from the local business community will also be featured.

The course introduces students to the fundamentals of finance in new ventures and/or high growth technology-driven businesses.  Students learn how to interpret and analyse financial statements and develop pro formas.  It has been a core course in the TME diploma program since 2001.

TME 3423 Prerequisite Change

Technological Risk and Opportunity (TME 3423), which is co-offered as MBA 6119 provides students with the opportunity to assess technological risk from an entrepreneurial perspective.  As part of the Activator Program, the course relies upon the connection made with a real-life start-up company that begins in the previous semester during the course TME 3413/MBA 6314.  In order to provide the necessary continuity, beginning in the 2010 winter term, we will be introducing a prerequisite to TME 3423 that will limit enrolment to only those students who have completed TME 3413 in the previous semester.   If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.

Exchange Students Experience Winter in NB

As the end of the winter term approaches, we must bid farewell to our first NAREN exchange students, visiting from Chihuahua Mexico.  Although they were kept very busy studying TME courses (they hope to complete the entire diploma) we did manage to show them a little bit of the more recreational side of winter in New Brunswick.

TME Chair Linda Bulmer escorted the foursome to Crabbe Mountain in February, where they bravely hit the slopes.  After an introductory lesson, all managed to enjoy some skiing or snowboarding and we are relieved to report no injuries!  Pictured above are Adriana Soto and Pamela Chavez enjoying their day at the skihill.

And what would a New Brunswick spring be without a traditional sugaring-off party?  In March, TME Program Coordinator Karin Zundel and her family hosted a maple-syrup themed afternoon (complete with taffy on snow).  Pictured at left are Monica Galevez and Jose Zavala enjoying some maple taffy.

Time went by much too quickly and we will certainly miss our Mexican friends.  We wish them well as they continue with their studies in Chihuahua.

Lego® Serious Play™ Presentation and Paper

In December, TME Chair Linda Bulmer successfully presented a Lego® Serious Play™ workshop at UNB’s Centre for Enhanced Teaching and Learning annual Kaleidoscope conference.  She has been invited to submit her paper to the 6th International Conference on Design and Engineering Education to be held at McMaster University in July.

It has been demonstrated that 'playing' can encourage social bonding, higher participation/collaboration levels as well as improve team effectiveness. Play is known to also engage the whole human system, helps with problem solving and is an essential component of imagination. "Your imagination creates the inner picture that allows you to participate in the act of creation."

Text Box: BACK TO TOPThe TME Centre is in its third year of using Lego and the Lego® Serious Play™ technique in the entrepreneurship and engineering classroom to help  engage students, build stronger teams, spur imagination, creativity and innovation. Linda Bulmer is a certified Serious Play™ facilitator.
