Christoph Lorey

Professor of German, 1994- (on leave)

Editor, International Fiction Review

Just as I thought that my teaching and research career had come to a screeching halt due to my battles with disabilities, I see myself being ripped back into academic life thanks to promising, young students and scholars whose work on intersexuality has newly aroused my interest in the history of sexual identity formation in North American and German/European cultures.

Currently I'm researching the similarities between what has come to be known in English as the "homosexual rights movement" in Germany at the turn of the last century and the present-day coming of age of an intersex identity and the battles for recognition in all areas of society and the law. It will come less as a surprise to see a German professor engaged in queer studies if one thinks of the linguistic implications that sociocultural developments or movements have and the literary traces they leave behind. The cultural implications of the coming-out of intersexed people are far-reaching and they have yet to be explored.

Alas, things are moving along at a snail's pace here. I'm happy whenever I can read more than two pages a day and get my voice recognition program to work so that I can type a few lines. Rehab is difficult and takes time. Thankfully I find great enjoyment in advising our students on academic matters.
