Contested Regional Identities

19th Atlantic Canada Studies Conference: May 4-6, 2012

Although Canada continues to experience strong regional identities, economic, cultural and political realities suggest that the concept of an Atlantic region can be reassessed or even challenged. The 19th Atlantic Canada Studies Conference will focus on the theme of the past, present and future of regionalism, with an emphasis on Atlantic Canada.

The papers will focus on the construction of cultural, provincial and regional identities, the contested nature of identities and the relation of region to nation. The conference will feature a keynote address by Professor Richard Judd, Chair Department of History, University of Maine, and will include twenty different sessions of papers, as well as a special round-table "Remembering Douglas Lochhead."

Special events include a kitchen party and conference banquet. In addition to academics, researchers and professionals in the public and private sectors are invited to attend.
