Intersecting Violence(s): Critical Perspectives on Gender, Power and Violence

This course examines violence as it presents within large-scale social structures, in the fabrics of communities, as well as on relational, interpersonal and individual levels. This course will explore how gender, power and violence are inextricably linked and investigates the root causes and social factors that contribute to and intersect with gender-based violence (GBV). This course is cross listed as FVI 4339 and SOCI 4339. Credit can only be obtained for one of CRIM 4339, FVI 4339 or SOCI 4339.

Prerequisite: 3 ch in Family Violence, Sociology or Criminology; or permission from the instructor

Why take this course?

• This is a core course for the Family Violence Issues Certificate Program at UNB.
• Learners will engage in critical, thought-provoking academic and applied discourses on pressing issues in the GBV sector.
• Learners will develop an intersectional and postcolonial feminist understanding of the systemic, multidimensional nature of violence, including how multiple forms of systemic violence interrelate with and compound GBV.
• Learners will broaden their social science toolkit, building both academic and applied skills through a series of assignments that facilitate creativity, critical thinking and introspection.

Course details

Students have six months from the registration date to complete the course. All course exams and/or assignments must be completed by the designated end date.

Assignments and examinations

The course will be evaluated through a series of assignments that aim to cater to diverse learning styles and preferences.

Students will be offered choice of topics/themes/assessment type throughout the course, allowing students to tailor their journey to meet their unique academic and professional goals:
