Mitacs builds partnerships between academia, industry, and the world – to create a more innovative Canada. Mitacs programs are open to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in any academic discipline. International students are welcome.

Mitacs Programs

Mitacs Accelerate

Mitacs Accelerate supports collaborative research between universities and non-academic partners, including industry and eligible not-for-profit organizations. The program is open to Canadian and international graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in all academic disciplines. 

  • For Undergrads, Master's, PhDs & Postdoctoral Fellows
  • Funding starts at $15,000 per four-month internship, including a minimum $10,000 intern stipend/salary and $5,000 for project expenses
  • Proposal are accepted anytime 
  • Applications are non-competitive

Before applying: 

  • First, search the Accelerate projects seeking interns database:
    • Seeking students and postdocs for collaborative projects with industry or not-for-profits. If you find one or more projects of interest, discuss the opportunity with your academic supervisor; if they are supportive, please apply using the link at the end of the project description.
    • Partners come from all industry sectors and are located across Canada and abroad.
    • If Mitacs determines there is a match, we will connect you and your academic supervisor with the partner to discuss and develop the proposal.
    • If UNB faculty members are interested in one of the projects, please contact Danielle Connell (dconnell@mitacs.ca).
  • Next, browse the Mitacs projects database to learn about past projects and explore what companies and not-for-profits are investing in Mitacs internships
  • Then, speak to your UNB supervisor about internship opportunities
    • Identify a non-academic partner who can contribute $7,500 per internship (matched by Mitacs). *for profit corporations and select not for profit organizations in Canada are eligible 
    • Confirm that you can spend 50 percent of the internship on site with the partner (remote work and work-from-home considerations can be incorporated into the plans for partner interactions)
    • Contact: Danielle Connell (dconnell@mitacs.ca) to confirm the eligibility of your non-academic partner and discuss your application

How to apply:

  • Write your proposal using the Mitacs online portal with your academic supervisor and partner organization. We strongly recommend starting your proposal three months before the desired internship start date.
  • Get feedback on your proposal from Danielle Connell at dconnell@mitacs.ca
  • Collect all required signatures via the online application portal and via the UNB Office of Research Services.
  • Once complete, the UNB supervisor submits the proposal online to Mitacs for review.

Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneur

Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneur funds student entrepreneurs to further develop the research or technology at the core of their business when hosted by an incubator facility. Mitacs funding helps student entrepreneurs to take real, meaningful advantage of the supports provided by the incubator, with the goal of commercializing the technology, product, or service rapidly.  The student entrepreneur spends the internship undertaking research that both furthers the company and their graduate work, while drawing a salary. In a nutshell, they get paid to grow their company and get to market faster.

  • For Undergrads, Master's, PhDs & Postdoctoral Fellows
  • Both Mitacs and the start-up invest in a research-based internship with the company for the graduate student or postdoc entrepreneur
  • Funding starts at $15,000 per four-month internship, including a minimum $10,000 intern stipend
  • Proposal are accepted anytime 
  • Applications are non-competitive

Before applying:

  • Then, speak to your UNB supervisor about an internship focused on your company’s R&D needs
    • Confirm that you can spend 50 percent of the internship on site with the incubator (remote work and work-from-home considerations can be incorporated into the plans for partner interactions)

How to apply:

  • Write your proposal using the Mitacs online portal with your academic supervisor and relevant staff at your company. We strongly recommend starting your proposal three months before the desired internship start date.
  • Get feedback on your proposal from Danielle Connell at dconnell@mitacs.ca
  • Complete and attach a Mitacs Conflict of Interest letter (template available)
  • Collect all required signatures via the online application portal and via the UNB Office of Research Services.
  • Once complete, the UNB supervisor submits the proposal online to Mitacs for review.

Mitacs Elevate

Mitacs Elevate is a Post Doctoral Fellowship with a customized research management training program, along with a two year research project with a non-academic organization. The program is open to Canadian and international postdoctoral fellows in all academic disciplines. 

  • Elevate awards are $60,000 per year for two years plus extensive customized professional development training ($7,500/year non-cash value)
  • Applications are accepted through a competitive call for proposals. For current deadlines see Mitacs Elevate.

Before applying: 

  • Browse the Mitacs projects database
  • Identify a faculty supervisor
  • Identify a non-academic partner who can contribute $35,000 per year. *For-profit corporations and select not-for-profit organizations are eligible
  • Confirm that you can spend 50 percent of the fellowship on site with the partner
  • Contact Danielle Connell at dconnell@mitacs.ca to confirm the eligibility of your non-academic partner and discuss your application

  • Submit an Intent to Apply by the posted deadline
  • Get feedback on your proposal from Danielle Connell at dconnell@mitacs.ca
  • Collect all required signatures and send to UNB ORS for final approval.
  • Submit your completed proposal package via the Mitacs website instructions.

Mitacs Globalink

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award provides travel funding for undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows in any field. This $6,000 award aids travel and research collaborations of 12-24 weeks at a university in any of Mitacs’ partner countries. Learn more about eligible destinations and award details. UNB Globalink Research Award supervisors are asked to contribute $2,000 towards the value of the award.

 To jumpstart your application:

  • Talk to your faculty supervisor to identify a professor in one of the eligible destinations who works in your research area
  • Reach out to professor(s) abroad about your research and hosting your potential project
  • Apply by following the steps outlined in the UNB GRA application guide.
  • Please allow 4 months lead time between submitting your application and your desired travel dates

  • Applications require a signature from participants and the UNB Office of Research Services prior to submission to Mitacs
