JDI Roundtable on Manufacturing Competitiveness in New Brunswick

Research

Research topics for 2020 are based on the discussions and recommendations from the 2019 JDI Roundtable Forum. These topics will be developed into reports and other informational products serving as the basis for discussion for the 2020 Roundtable and events and outreach.

Key research projects for 2020

1. New Brunswick manufacturers directory

Directory of manufacturers and statistical description of industries in New Brunswick compared to neighboring provinces and the state of Maine

2. Survey of New Brunswick manufacturers

We have commissioned a rubric describing the technological maturity of a manufacturer with Industry 4.0 as the end point. We have used the rubric to construct a survey to be administered to manufacturers allowing us to describe industry-level technological maturity.

3. Growing capacity in the north

Northern New Brunswick has a disproportionately large manufacturing presence despite the region’s losses of pulp and paper mills, smelters and mines. We investigate the prospects of re-invigorating the economy of northern New Brunswick through policies to improve the competitiveness of manufacturers in the region.

The 2020 Northern Vision Nord Symposium Event was held March 13, 2020 in Beresford. This event was an opportunity for regional stakeholders to connect, share their perspectives and brainstorm ideas with the goal of identifying actions that could positively impact the Northern NB economy.

4. Manufacturing productivity

The objectives of the study are to document and assess the state of innovation in New Brunswick; to analyze and quantify the impact of innovation on productivity in New Brunswick at the aggregate, industry, and firm level; and to put forward recommendations to improve the innovation performance of the province and the impact on this performance on productivity.

The JDI Roundtable commissioned the Centre for the Study of Living Standards to present reports for the JDI Roundtable on this topic. The first report explores a comprehensive statistical description of innovation and business R&D in New Brunswick related to other provinces.

5. Ease of Doing Business Index

In partnership with the Centre for the Study of Living Standards, we will construct the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Index for New Brunswick providing us with a measure of regulatory burden that can be compared with that of 100s of countries and subnational jurisdictions. We can also determine which domains of regulation are putting us at a disadvantage and which can be altered to improve our ease of doing business.

Engagement

To inform the Roundtable research, a series of online small group meetings with manufacturers and stakeholders were held to obtain their input on three topics:

  1. Survey of New Brunswick manufacturers
  2. Post COVID-19 – What has changed for manufacturers since last year in terms of business conditions and expectations?
  3. Post COVID-19 – Will we see more automation and move toward industry 4.0?
