MEC: Myoelectric Controls Symposium
MEC is a triennial symposium of special interest to those who work in the fields of upper limb prosthetics and myoelectric control (including upper and lower limb). As in previous years, it was hosted by the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, a research institute recognized worldwide for its pioneering work in myoelectric controls. MEC20 will be held in Fredericton, New Brunswick, August 10-13, 2020. MEC20 is returning to the UNB camput this year, and will be located in the spacious Currie Center.
Call for Papers, Workshops, and Perspective Talks
MEC20 – Call for Workshops
We can accommodate a limited number of special talks or panel discussions during the symposium. We are also coordinating with Orthotics Prosthetics Canada (OPC) to provide pre-symposium workshops, which will be limited in number and must appeal to a broad audience (including prosthetists and orthotists). Please feel free to suggest an in-symposium special talk or a pre-conference workshop by e-mailing email@example.com with a brief summary including the type (in-symposium or pre-conference), time, and space required. Suggestions are due by March 1, 2020.
MEC20 – Call for Perspective-talks
Based on feedback from past MECs, we will consider having a few longer talks (~20 minutes) from experts in the field that present the recent history and context of their research. These talks should be geared towards a broad community that includes clinicians, scientists, and engineers. If you are interested in being considered for one of these talks, please submit a brief abstract of what you would talk about to firstname.lastname@example.org. We may receive more high-quality submissions than time allows. If that happens we will try to diversify the topic areas that are presented this MEC, and will keep other high-quality submissions in mind when designing the next MEC. Perspective-talk abstracts are due by March 1, 2020.
MEC20 – Call for Papers
MEC20 is now accepting submissions. Please note the following:
All papers will be peer-reviewed. One author from each paper must be willing to review at least two other papers (or designate another in their place). The author selected to be the reviewer should not be a student.
- This year authors need to submit a full-length manuscript (2-4 pages), based on feedback from the MEC community. Author preference will be considered when determining podium and poster slots, although final decisions are subject to availability.
- Authors must use the MEC template to submit manuscripts. This template is available in our online submission system (see below).
- All submissions are due March 1, 2020. Because we are using a peer-review process, we do not anticipate extending the deadline.

Manuscripts and abstracts are being solicited for the symposium on the following topics:
- Clinical practice (prosthetics and therapy; case-studies, tips, training strategies)
- Clinical research studies (prosthetics, training, therapy, outcome measures; typically includes protocol and/or statistics; not focused on lab-based tests)
- User experience (psychosocial factors, pain, home use, satisfaction, and environmental factors)
- Myoelectric control algorithms (including the algorithms themselves and lab-based tests of them)
- Myoelectric control and sensory feedback implementation (surgeries, implants, etc.)
- Prosthetic devices and materials (may be mechanical, electrical, or harnessing related, and may focus on mechanisms or materials)
Presentations should appeal to a broad audience of clinicians and researchers.

BE (Env), MBA (Tech Mgt)Matthew Ames, BE (Env), MBA (Tech Mgt), was 39 years old when what started as a sore throat resulted in the loss of all four of his limbs (both above elbow above knee). Matthew has a unique mix of professional and personal experience. With a grounding of almost 20 years in the energy and resources industry, he has found innovative ways to apply his knowledge for maximising prosthetic use to achieve his goals. Matthew is involved in a variety of endeavours, serving on boards and steering committees for a number of organisations, including Bionics Queensland, State and Federal Governments and not-for-profit organisations.
Max Ortiz Catalán, Ph.D.
Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, SwedenMax Ortiz Catalán, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, where he founded and currently leads the Biomechatronics and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory (@ChalmersBNL). His research includes bioelectric signals acquisition electronics (analog and digital); bioelectric signal processing and machine learning algorithms for decoding motor volition and control; neuromuscular interfaces; neurostimulation for sensory feedback; bone-anchored prostheses and osseointegration; and,virtual and augmented reality for neuromuscular rehabilitation and the treatment of phantom limb pain.
Dr. Arun Jayaraman
Associate Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy & Human Movement Sciences, and Medical Social Sciences, Northwestern UniversityDr. Arun Jayaraman is an Associate Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy & Human Movement Sciences, and Medical Social Sciences at Northwestern University's Medical School. His work primarily focuses on developing and executing both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored research in prosthetics, orthotics, rehabilitation robotics, and other assistive and adaptive technologies to treat physical disability. He conducts all his outcomes research using advanced wearable patient monitoring wireless sensors and novel machine learning techniques, in addition to the traditional performance-based and patient-reported outcomes.
