Description

This project aims to create a scalable and economically sustainable model for applied research focused on the health and well-being of seniors living at home and in community settings. It brings together the New Brunswick Community College, the University of New Brunswick Saint John campus and community partners, with an initial focus on the greater Saint John region. The work will translate findings from data housed at DataNB into applied research projects that involve NBCC students through work-integrated learning opportunities such as applied research, entrepreneurial activities, service learning and cooperative education.

Improving understanding of healthy aging is increasingly important as the proportion of New Brunswick residents aged 65 and older continues to rise. Higher demand for health care and social services among seniors has broad societal implications, and families and governments face pressures in supporting healthy aging while meeting other community needs. With forecasts showing no near-term shifts in demographic trends, the need for new solutions that can be implemented in a scalable and self-sustaining way is growing.

Developing approaches that address the needs of older adults while remaining sustainable will help ensure seniors have access to programs and services informed by current research. Pilot programs with the greatest potential impact are essential for supporting the aging population and using available resources efficiently.
