FAQ's - Continuing UNB Students

Do I need to apply?

YES! Even though the scholarships are awarded primarily on your grades, it is not done automatically. Everyone who is coming back to UNB full-time in the fall should submit an application.

What does UNB consider?

Academic achievement is the primary consideration in awarding scholarships. For continuing students, UNB uses a Scholarship Grade Point Average as a basis for awarding scholarships. A Scholarship GPA is calculated at the end of the assessment year (May to April) provided that 24 credit hours or more have been attempted, regardless of program. For students involved in work placement programs such as Co-op or PEP, the scholarship average is calculated using the Dean's List criteria. This GPA is held internally and is not displayed on the student's transcript.

Do I have to be a Dean’s List student to get a scholarship?

No, but you’d stand a better chance at receiving a scholarship if you were. Preference is given to Dean’s List students but there are a few scholarships that have tight restrictions that might not be met by Dean’s List students. If you don’t apply, you won’t be considered for those ones.

I am graduating in May. Should I apply?

You should be returning to UNB full-time in the upcoming fall in an undergraduate degree program to be considered for scholarship support. Be aware that the application is for scholarships, not prizes. (Prizes do not require an application.)

Scholarships are meant to help students attend UNB. If you are not at UNB, you can’t keep your scholarship.

I am done by degree requirements in December. Should I apply?

Yes, you will receive the fall portion of the scholarship.

What if I am finished at Christmas? Can I have all my scholarship in the Fall?

No. If you are at UNB for only one term, you will receive half the value of your scholarship, as long as you are enrolled in 12 credit hours or 4 courses during that term.

I don’t need to attend full-time both terms to finish my degree in May? Can I keep my scholarship?

If you attend full-time one term and part-time the other, and your faculty will verify for the Undergraduate Awards Office that you will complete your degree requirements, you might be able to keep your scholarship. Please contact the Undergraduate Awards Office to discuss your situation.

I am graduating in May and starting BED or LLB in the Fall. Should I apply?

YES. The Bachelor of Education and the Bachelor of Laws are an undergraduate degree programs. You will be considered for scholarship support based on the grades you made in your previous UNB undergraduate degree this year.

I am in an articulated degree program – BHS, BAMHT, BAA, BMLS. Should I apply?

YES. Students in articulated degree programs are eligible for scholarship support ONLY if they apply. Click here for more info

What if I drop to part-time?

Scholarship recipients must be enrolled in 12 credit hours or 4 courses at UNB each term in order to keep a scholarship. This is also the minimum amount of hours needed to be assessed for a scholarship in the next year. It would be best to discuss your situation with the Undergraduate Awards Office first.

How do I get the money?

Scholarships are applied to your student account – half the amount in the Fall and half the amount in the Winter. Tuition and compulsory fees are deducted first, so you end up paying less.

If the amount exceeds your fees, (lucky you!) you can request a refund cheque from Jennifer Mazerolle in Financial Services (jenmaz@unb.ca).

If you are a student in an articulated degree program and you are attending the partnering institution, please forward proof of registration to the Undergraduate Awards Office and we will authorize release of your cheque.

How do I know if I received a scholarship?

Successful applicants are notified by email during the summer months. Also, students can view their scholarships through their eServices under the Academic tab, click on Scholarships Awarded. You can start checking around mid- to late-July.

I got a scholarship! How do I thank the donor?

First of all, congratulations! Well done!

UNB’s Office of Development and Donor Relations will be in touch with donor contact information, if available. This normally happens in the Fall term, once everything has been awarded.

A thank-you note is VERY important. UNB is always grateful to our donors but they really want to hear from you – the student – the person they want to help out. What does the scholarship mean to you?
