September 12 - Governor General's Gold Medal - Awarded at fall encaenia, the prestigious Governor General's Gold Medal is awarded based on academic excellence and faculty nomination to an outstanding graduate student completing a thesis/report or a doctoral level program.

Upcoming external awards

October 01 - CIHR CGS Doctoral Scholarships - Valued at $35,000 per year for up to three years, the CIHR CGS Doctoral Scholarships are open to Canadian and Permanent Residents. 

The application process is completed online, independently from the University, within ResearchNet. CIHR provides a detailed application guide, and also provides application instructions.

October 01 - CGS Vanier Scholarships - The 2017-18 CGS Vanier Scholarship Competition has been launched. Eligible students should contact their Faculty/Department to review the application process and work on a timeline for submission, as well as discuss review/editing sessions internally and with the School of Graduate Studies.

Applications must be submitted online no later than October 01, 2017 @ 8:00PM EST (subject to change).

October 09 - NSERC CGS Doctoral Scholarships - Applications to the NSERC Doctoral competition are submitted online through the NSERC Research Portal. Students applying through the University of New Brunswick must submit their application via the NSERC Research Portal no later than October 09, 2017 11:59PM EST. For complete instructions on completing and submitting Form 201, refer to the Instructions for Completing an Application.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS: (Subject to change)

  • October 09, 2017 - Deadline for completed applications to be submitted to the portal.
  • October 11, 2017 - Applications forwarded to Departments for Review and Ranking.
  • October 20, 2017 - Department reviews, ranks and comments back to SGS.
  • November 03, 2017 - Selection Committee Rankings complete.
  • November 10, 2017 - Comments and suggested edits back to applicants who will be forwarded to the National Competition.
  • November 25, 2017—NSERC NATIONAL DEADLINE. All Universities must have confirmed their applications in the NSERC portal. Late and ineligible applications will not be accepted
  • UNB applicants will be notified of the results of the UNB Internal competition.

October 14 (Suggested Departmental deadline) - SSHRC CGS Doctoral Scholarships - SSHRC Doctoral Awards, valued at up to $35,000 per year for 3 years, are available to Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents. The application process involves completing an SSHRC On-Line System application and submitting all required documents by your Departments internal deadline.

The timeline (tentative and subject to change) for the UNB SSHRC Doctoral application process is as follows:

  • October 14, 2017 - Departmental Deadline (Suggested internal deadline - larger departments my require more time)
  • November 06, 2017 - Departments required to forward ranked applications to the School of Graduate Studies.
  • December 04, 2017 - Selection Committee Rankings due to SGS
  • December 08, 2017 - Applications selected to be forwarded will be announced
  • December 12, 2017 - Applications to be forwarded to the National competition will be returned to students with suggested edits.
  • December 20, 2017 - Revised and FINAL copies of applications must be submitted to the School of Graduate Studies.
  • January 09, 2018 - Original copies of applications must be submitted to SSHRC.

On Campus Workshops

September 12 - UNBFR - NSERC Site Visit - NSERC Program Officers will be visiting campus to present on scholarship application processes for Graduate Students. Students, Faculty and Staff are welcome to attend.

September 14 - UNBFR - SSHRC Doctoral Workshop - Dr. Heather Sears, Assistant Dean, will be hosting a SSHRC Doctoral Application workshop where the application process will be explained in detail. Students, Faculty and staff with vested interest are encouraged to attend.

  • Where: Snodgrass Lounge, Kierstead Hall
  • Time: 5:00pm

November 21 - UNBFR - MITACS Workshop - Growing Your Network - MITACS will be visiting the UNB Fredericton campus for a full-day workshop on growing your network. Workshop and registration details will be posted here in the near future.

  • Time: 9:00am - 5:30pm

Online workshops

January 10 - MITACS Online Workshop - Time Management - MITACS will be hosting an online workshop focused on improving time management. Workshop and registration details will be posted here in the near future.

  • Duration: The workshop will be availble to access for 21 days and is expected to take up to four hours to complete.
