International Student Employment Readiness Program

Entering the Canadian job market can be challenging for international students and so Student Employment Services and the International Student Advisor's Office have teamed up to offer the International Student Employment Readiness Program.  This program will assist international students who are in their final year at UNB to develop the skills necessary to find success in the Canadian job market. 

International Students participating in the Employment Readiness Program will be required to:

  • Complete all workshops (listed below)
  • Attend at least two networking events
  • Complete a volunteer component

After successful completion of these three components, students will receive a program certificate.

International Student Employment Readiness Workshop Schedule:

Program Introduction and Sign-Up

All international students who are interested will be invited to learn more about the program and the requirements for receiving a certificate.  A maximum of 25 students will be accepted into the program and preference will be given to students in their final year.

Canadian Immigration Forum

Are you interested in Immigrating to Canada after you graduate?  Are you interested in staying in New Brunswick to work? If you answered yes to either question than this workshop will give you all the information you need to get started.

Cover Letter and Resume Writing Workshops

Learn how to use the Optimal Resume software to develop your resume and cover letters; and learn general employment document building tips and strategies.  Attend any workshop in September, October and November.  List of workshops on Student Employment Service Calendar of Events.

Employability Skills Identification

Employers want to know that you have the right skills for the job. Do you know which skills you have? How do you describe those skills in an interview or résumé? This workshop will help you identify specific job skills, as well as the "soft" skills that are needed for any occupation.

The Job Search – Where to begin/ Interview Skills – How to Prepare

This workshop is all about being prepared.  Learn how to begin your job search, how to uncover the hidden job market, and the art of informational interview. Learn from fellow job seekers about the benefits of networking and how informational interviews expand professional networks.
In addition, you will learn how to prepare for an interview and create your own “60 second self-commercial.”

Interview Night

Local employers in your field will arrive on campus to meet you for a “practice” interview.  Not only is this a great opportunity to test your interview skills, but it is also a great networking event with local employers!

How to use social media to find a job and advance your career

Social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn are not just about finding friends anymore. Many employers use social media sites to both find and screen potential employees.
Discover how to maximize the latest social media trends to conduct employer/industry research and build your network.  Learn how to conduct yourself professionally and uncover hidden opportunities and gain access to information that's not easily found elsewhere.

Intercultural Communication in the Workplace

Starting a new job can be an adjustment for anyone, but for those new to the Canadian workforce, fitting into a workplace where the nuances of communication are not included in the company policy manual can be especially difficult. This session highlights aspects of workplace culture such as: nonverbal communication, elements of rank, gender issues, social expectations, workplace dress and decorum and other organizational culture subtleties that are specific to most Canadian workplaces.

Mastering the Art of Public Speaking

Most careers involve some level of public speaking, whether it is through formal/individual presentations or by contributing your ideas to team meetings – feeling confident to speak-up in a group setting is essential.  This workshop is designed to let you learn-by-doing and will help you enhance your speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere.

Workplace Etiquette

Think how much more business you could accomplish if you were not worried about which fork to use. Polished dining and corporate etiquette skills contribute to an overall image of competence and confidence. Learn the basics of business dining, how to present yourself in social situations and how to effectively mix business and pleasure.

Networking Breakfast

This is our final event and a chance to practice all your skills in a formal setting with local employers.
Students who have completed all the components of the Employment Readiness Program will receive their certificate.
