University of NewBrunswick, Fredericton- Gearing Up for Inter-University Campus ClimateChallenge
UNB's energy-reduction competition is gathering momentum asa wider Atlantic Provinces challenge.
Fredericton, NewBrunswick – From January 28rd to February 11th, 2013, universities across theAtlantic Provinces will compete to reduce energy consumption within theirresidences through the Campus Climate Challenge, or C3.
This year's competition will include Acadia University, theUniversity of Prince Edward Island, Saint Francis Xavier University, MemorialUniversity of Newfoundland, Mount Allison University, the University of NewBrunswick, and the University of New Brunswick at Saint John.
Students will challenge themselves and other universityresidences to reduce energy consumption in innovative and effective ways. Theuniversity judged to have reduced its energy consumption most significantlywill receive a prize. Individual universities will also have prizes for thewinners of smaller, inter-residence competitions.
The competition focuses on spreading awareness concerningsustainable living and environmental issues to students. "The purpose of theCampus Climate Challenge is to raise awareness of how much energy is being usedand how we can make big savings by doing little things," says Sarah Thomas, aMount Allison student and competition organizer. "If everyone does their part,we can make a difference."
C3 began in 2006 as an inter-residence challenge withinMount Allison University, but it has evolved over time from a single-universitycompetition into a challenge between many Atlantic universities. AUCSN(Atlantic Universities and Colleges Sustainability Network), this yearorganizers and the ESC (Environment and Sustainability Committee) at UNB arebuilding momentum to involve more universities and promote creative energy-savingstrategies.
Each year has yielded greater results: last year's winningresidence at UNB saw its energy use undergo a reduction of 10%. "We're hopingfor more success than in the past competitions. We want to raise awareness forthe importance of energy conservation across our campus," says Shannon Adams, athird-year UNB Fredericton student and C3 organizer, "and we're very excitedabout the competition this year as we're beginning to bridge the gap betweenstudent and facility sustainability initiatives by working together."
