UNB Fredericton MBA Regulations
Prerequisites
There are no formal prerequisites required for some of the first year courses; others require completion of courses normally undertaken during the first term of studies.
Students must follow the course sequence outlined in the UNB graduate calendar and on this website, and complete prerequisites prior to enrolment. Approvals for any exceptions to this policy will occur only under extraordinary conditions. A student is expected to consult with the academic advisors of the Faculty of Business Administration in the development of a program of study.
Workload
The normal course load for full-time MBA students is 30 ch in the first year of the program, and 24 ch in the second year of the program.
A full-time student is a person whose work load consists of a minimum of 9 ch in each term (or 18 ch for two terms in the regular autumn and winter sessions). Part-time candidates may not take more than 6 ch per term. Registration in a thesis or project is subject to the workload policies published by the School of Graduate Studies.
Advanced Standing
Candidates upon admission, who have taken comparable business courses at other universities, may apply for advanced standing in first year required courses. Applications must be made on a one-time only basis at the start of studies; applications in year two will not be accepted. Forms are submitted by students to the MBA secretary, who will then circulate the forms and supporting documentation to the relevant faculty members. Students may not circulate the forms or personally lobby instructors for advanced standing. All decisions are final and are not subject to appeal or further review.
Advanced standing normally requires a minimum of B or 3.0 in a comparable graduate level university course. Workshops and seminars are not considered comparable educational experiences. Two undergraduate courses are usually required for one graduate level advanced standing. Instructors may insist upon higher standards. Advanced standing will not be granted for second year required courses or for electives. Please also note that work experience does not constitute grounds for advanced standing in any course delivered by the Faculty of Business Administration.
On-Line Courses
Undergraduate on-line courses normally will not be accepted for degree credit in the MBA program. Students are expected to register in classroom-based courses at UNBF, owing to the importance of group work and student interaction in the learning experience. On-line courses from other institutions normally will not be accepted for degree credit. Exceptions may be granted by the Faculty of Business Administration's Director of Graduate Studies, under highly extraordinary circumstances but approval must be secured in advance of registration.
Performance Standards
- Student performance is reviewed at the end of each term by the Director of Graduate Studies for the Faculty of Business Administration.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) is required for graduation.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) must be maintained at each review period following the completion of 15 credit hours. Candidates who fall below this level will be placed on “conditional” status and must achieve the minimum level within two terms or will be required to withdraw. The Faculty of Business Administration may designate the sequence of studies and/or the completion of supplemental obligations as provisions of “conditional” status.
- A candidate who receives a D or F will normally be required to withdraw.
- A minimum grade of 2.7 (B-) must be secured on each mandatory course for degree credit. A course may only be repeated once. A candidate will be withdrawn if grades below 2.7 (B-) are incurred for more than the equivalent of six credit hours across the programme of study.
