
NORMAN M. BETTS, Associate Professor, has been associated with the University of New Brunswick since 1981 and joined the Faculty of Business Administration in 1992. He teaches Intermediate Accounting in the BBA program and Accounting and Decision-Making in the MBA program. He was Assistant Dean (Graduate) from 1994 to 1997.
Dr. Betts has an extensive record of public service. He was elected MLA for Southwest Miramichi and served as Minister of Finance and Minister of Business New Brunswick. He is a director of New Brunswick Power Holdings, the crown corporation that produces and delivers electricity for the province, and is a director of its four subsidiaries (N.B. Power Generation, N.B. Power Nuclear, N.B. Power Transmission and N.B. Power Distribution and Customer Service). He is also a member of the board of directors of Tembec Inc. and is a member of the audit and human resource committees. Dr. Betts also serves as a director and chairs the audit committees for Minacs Worldwide Inc., Slam Exploration Ltd., and Tan Range Exploration Ltd. He is a co-chair of the board of trustees of the UNB Pension Plan for Academic Employees and is a director of the Nature Conservancy for the Atlantic region. His was appointed to the Advisory Committee (Atlantic Chapter) of the Institute of Corporate Directors in 2005.
Dr. Betts in 2007 was appointed to a three year term as a member of the board of directors of the Export Development Corporation. EDC is Canada's export credit agency, offering innovative commercial solutions to help Canadian exporters and investors expand their international business. A recognized leader in financial reporting, economic analysis and human resources management, EDC's knowledge and partnerships are used by 7,000 Canadian companies and their global customers in up to 200 markets worldwide each year. His academic interest areas are financial and managerial accounting. His research efforts have focused upon the accounting practices of public utilities. He also teaches in management development and executive programs.
